The 39er

Norman & Tony's 70th Birthday match

Sunday July 19 saw an inter-club fixture take place celebrating the birthdays of a number of Hatfield players. Tony Foster and Norman Reid were both 70 years old this year and they put together a '39ers' XI to play against Andy Ashley-Smith 'Route 66' team. The game proved to a remarkable milestone for Suki Grewal who hit his first ever hundred for the club. His innings of 103 was the backbone of the 'Route 66' score with John McCarthy (34) and Darshan Desai (39) also making healthy contributions as Andy Ashley-Smith's team reached 227-9 from their 40 overs. In reply, Chris Reid and father Norman Reid put on 104 for the first wicket to see the '39ers' to a great start.
Chris Reid went onto score 102 before being caught by Alan Jakes and the innings sadly went awry from then. Darshan Desai weaved a magic spell to take 5-13 in 5 overs whilst Andy Ashley-Smith took 3-23; amoungst his victims was Herts starlet Steve Gale plumb LBW for just 7. The '39ers' were eventually bowled out for just 205. 'Route 66' gaining a 22 run success.
