2 Cents on making a bad situation worse

As if it wasn't bad enough that so many old slasher movies which were pretty much perfect, or close to it are being remade...now we're starting to see a stream of PG-13 remakes flooding the market. "Prom Night", the recently released disaster of epic proportions, was PG-13. And while Sony may apparently view it as a success because it opened with 22 million dollars on it's opening weekend, most horror fans hated it. Internet bloggers hated it, and the usual reviewers for mainstream horror films hated it.

But in an age of super-hyper-capitalism, it's become apparent that much like morality has taken a backseat with the war in Iraq, or as I like to refer to it as..."The Attack On Iraq", it seems good entertainment has taken a backseat with these current slasher movie remakes. Most importantly, good "horror" entertainment has taken a backseat with these films. Horror is a genre that should include blood, gore, and graphic demises. Not GAP ad teenagers, cheap thrills, and flat scares.

But why have all of the important and necessary elements that makes a remake of a classic slasher movie entertaining, taken a back seat? Because of one thing, money. PG-13 horror films make alot more money for studios, and it seems this attitude is also bleeding over into the remake subgenre as well. Even though appropriate remakes like "The Hills Have Eyes" and it's sequel have helped to give remakes a good name...junk like "Prom Night", and "The Grudge" have helped to ruin things. Now, we have a remake of "Hell Night" coming, the 1981 Linda Blair led slasher film which is being remade by Sony Screen Gems, and has already been set up as a PG-13 "teeny-bopper" redo. I'm a believer in the rating having nothing to do with it. Sure...with a PG-13 horror movie, more kids can get in, but didn't this same age group make "House of 1000 Corpses" a moderate success? Didn't they make "Scream", "I Know What You Did Last Summer", and "Jeepers Creepers" huge successes?

Hell...the "Saw" series releases a new sequel every year and it rakes in the dough like nobodies business. So where exactly is the excuse for putting out watered down, fluff slashers for pre-teens? Financial concerns aside, hasn't there been enough proof that "R" rated films can succeed if they're good enough? "Scary Movie" for example, was a film that teetered on the brink of NC-17....and yet it broke tons of records back in 2000. Films rated "R" in the horror genre have shown that with a good ad campaign, and a good overall film, that they can succeed financially. And remaking an "R" rated film, in PG-13 format is not only a recipe for disaster, but a slap in the face to the original as well. For a quick reference on this, see "The Fog" remake.

There is however some hope, as each new film gets remade...that's one more film we come closer to the remake well drying up for good. Not to mention some of these rights owners will hopefully sooner or later stop selling their properties to these clueless studios who have no idea how to properly redo the material. But then again money talks...and just like a retired or out of the business currently rights owner might jump at the chance to sell his film property to some studio for a fat check, as long as these PG-13 remakes keep having 20 million+ weekend openings, they'll keep cranking them out. Just my 2 cents.
