The Best And Worst of 2008 Part II

Now that I've listed my worst horror films of 2008, it's time to move on to better things...like my "Best Horror Films Of 2008" list. First up on what I like to call "The Good List"...is "Cloverfield". This modern day monster movie tells the story of a group of young New Yorkers who during a going away party for one of their friends, find their beloved city coming under attack from a gigantic mysterious creature that suddenly decides to rise from the ocean and wreak havoc. It also carries with it smaller parasites that eat and kill anything in their path. The film had one of the best ad campaigns I had ever witnessed, and the film in the end, with it's stylish and slick dialogue and camerawork, lived up to the hype. On top of all of that, it was truly an intense cinematic experience, and while not showing much of the monster except for a few 10 to 15 second glimpses...still managed to make the audience believe The Big Apple was in serious trouble with great sound effects and a smart overall movie-making style.

Next up is the French terror pic "Frontieres", which was so graphic and so kick ass that apparently, After Dark Films felt it was too hardcore for Horrorfest 2007. And when you do not make the list for After Dark Horrorfest, that's when you know a film is worth seeing...most of the time. This film told the story of a group of thieves who find themselves in the clutches of Neo Nazi inn owners after they seek shelter during France riots sparked by a recent election result. "Frontieres" has it all, twisted bad guys, lots of graphic violence, blood, gore, carnage, and that one person who rises up against the bad guys in the end, and gets into the right mental zone to match their evil so he or she can be left standing when it's all said and done. It makes the list because it's a "true" horror film.

The third film on the list surprisingly is a remake, "Shutter", starring Rachael Taylor and Joshua Jackson. The film isn't perfect, but with a very humorous yet scary-as-hell in some ways story of attraction and lust from beyond the grave, and the ultimate payback to a cheating heart...this is one remake that manages to deliver on most levels. The films final scene is also one that is sure to leave a lasting impression. Next on "The Good List", is "The Ruins", a movie where a group of kids on "vacay", decide to visit a Mayan temple, and it pretty much turns out to be the last trip they ever take. What makes this movie so good beyond the horrifying scenario, and the even more horrifying villain...is the thought of being caught between death by supernatural plant, or death by scared mayan tribe...while high atop a mayan temple. Sometimes horror is simply the worst predicament imaginable, and in the case of "The Ruins"...that rings very true.

Dario Argento's "Mother Of Tears" is next on the list. It's a return to his "Third Mother" series which began years ago with "Suspiria". The story is truly terrifying, the blood and gore are always present, but the film contains very many disturbing scenes...which is really what Argento horror is all about, leaving a lasting impression. Casting Asia Argento to star in the film wasn't a bad choice either, as she carries the pic very well. It makes the list because it's a very impactful supernatural horror film that returns to the roots of Italian horror in the best way possible. "George A. Romero's:Diary Of The Dead" also makes the good list. The movie isn't the most exciting or action-packed installment of his "Dead" series, but the situation plays out in such a surreal and realistic fashion that you simply have to be impressed from that standpoint.
Next up, "The Lost". This adaptation of the "Jack Ketchum" novel. Sure it was quite boring, at time unbelievable, and very cliche...but Marc Senter as Ray Pye gives an excellent performance, and if you can block out everything else and focus on that you'll grow to like this film in some fashion. This one was a tough choice for me because it came very close to making the "other" list. If not for Senter, it probably would've. We now go foreign with "Death Note", the movie with a huge cult following in Japan. I didn't find it as exciting as others did, but the movie certainly has a certain style and likeability factor many other films lack. The characters are cool, and the story is just unique enough to make this one worth seeing, and to allow it to make my "good" list. Back to the states with "The Strangers". When a young couple visit their cottage for a romantic weekend, three kooks dressed in scary garb quickly ruin their plans. Using flat out terror, suspense, and scares is a lost art in horror these days. "The Strangers" has rediscovered that art, and without relying too much on violence and gore, it just gives you big time thrills, chills, and butterflies for 90+ minutes and then sends you away wanting more.

Next we have the little indie pic that could..."Teeth". A scenario where a girl has actual teeth in her vagina is enough to carry any film on some perverse level, even if it lacks a coherent plot or good acting. But "Teeth" heaps a coherent plot, good acting, shocking moments, and some clever/smart dialogue and character situations...all on top of this vagina-dentata myth. Hence it's making of the list. Keifer Sutherland has defeated terrorists and bad guys on many occasions, but in the next film on my "Best" list, "Mirrors"...he's pitted up against the supernatural. In this remake of "Into The Mirror", sinister reflections attack a mans family when he scores a gig as security guard in a burnt out shopping center. Again...this is a film that makes the list because it picks up the lost art of chills, thrills, and scares without splattering blood and gore all over the place. But the fact that a woman rips her own face apart in one of the movies most memorable scenes...certainly doesn't hurt it's cause.

Next up, we go underground in "Clive Barker's:Midnight Meat Train". The film tells the tale of Mahogany, a man charged with the task of butchering subway riders for a demon who holds sway over him. Despite being shafted by Lionsgate into an ultra-limited release, this movie is Barker's written works brought to film in the best way. Between the great performances, the intense scenes, the slinking scares, and the massive amounts of blood and gore...you'll find just as much to like about this film as I did...which is why it makes the list. Jigsaw is back...or is he? Either way, "Saw 5" makes our "Best" list. While it dropped the ball on satisfactory traps, it did up the quality of the story from the fourth film, and it also filled in some much-needed-to-be-filled-in plot gaps. Then there's that ending, which is like something out of a James Bond film...but with a twisted tinge to it. Creature Feature "Splinter" makes the grade as well.

Starring Jill Wagner, the film has a couple getting car-jacked by two backwoods types. But they are soon forced to hole up inside a supermarket when a creature which contorts the body of it's victims makes them it's next target. "Splinter" makes the list because it makes it's monster the star of the show. That's what a monster movie should do, and director Toby Wilkins got the message. Between the delightfully creepy monster, the amazing creature effects, and the intense attack scenes, "Splinter" is monster-movie-dom at it's best. What happens when horror meets dance?? We get our next film, "Repo:The Genetic Opera". Darren Lynn Bousman manages to do something new and fresh, while telling a great story, keeping the blood, gore, and carnage at optimum levels, and delivering some great performances from a cast filled with veteran talent like Bill Moseley and Paul Sorvino...to young talent like Alexa Vega. It definitely makes the list.

Brian Cox seeks vengeance for his dog in our next film..."Red". Although it doesn't deliver as much carnage from a visual standpoint as the Jack Ketchum novel, Cox's performance as a man who slowly descends into controlled-madness after something he loves is taken from him, make it a film that performs and executes the act of psychological horror really well. To the UK we go next with "Eden Lake". Loutish youths terrorize a young couple who just wanna spend a romantic weekend together.

While it doesn't have killers in a mask, monsters, demons, aliens, or any of those things...it makes the list because it shows the very, VERY...dark side of the human condition, and how despite what the media says, we will always be our own worst enemy. The ending is a very shocking turn of events as well. Lastly, and I know I'll probably get alot of shit for this, is "Twilight". It's last, so atleast give me credit for that. But it makes the list because it was everything I expected it to be. A sappy love story, with cookie-cutter teens, and an occasional cool visual or two. It didn't disappoint me to any ultra-appauling levels. While I cannot tolerate an extremely poor movie, I can tolerate a film which I know going in is going to give me alot of things I could care less about because it's geared towards a certain demo. And so concludes the "Best And Worst Horror Movies" list of 2008.
