Horror movies &stuff Interviews "Halloween II" Star Brea Grant!
With Rob Zombie's "Halloween 2" set to hit cinemas August 28th (that's 17 days from now folks)...HM&S.com chatted with one of the films female stars, Brea Grant. Grant, who plays Mya Rockwell in the film, Laurie's new best friend -- and co-worker at the hip Haddonfield hangout "The Java Hole", is slowly but surely climbing up the ranks in Hollywood. Especially in the horror genre with appearances in Jack Messit's "Midnight Movie", and an appearance in the upcoming John Fallon horror pic "Trance"! In this interview, we talk with her about "H2", "Trance", and a tiny slice of "Heroes" as well!
MR. H:What was your initial reaction to getting offered a role in "H2"?
Brea:I was thrilled. I'm a big horror fan and Halloween is such a part of my childhood. It's amazing to be a part of the "Halloween" legacy. Plus, I get to help scare a whole new generation of kids.
MR. H:Did you know right off the bat that the role was for the character of Mya Rockwell, and did you have to audition for it or not?
Brea:I did have to audition for the part of Mya, but she was a character I was pretty comfortable playing because she reminds me so much of myself.
MR. H:Did you see any of re-watch any of the original "Halloween" movies 1-8, and Rob Zombie's "Halloween" (2007)? What were your opinions of them?
Brea:Like I said, Halloween was part of my childhood. I re-watched Halloween 1, 2 and 3 again to get excited about doing the H2. I watched Rob's Halloween super early in the morning before my audition to get a feel for him as a director. Rob's style is amazing - he takes everything and makes it his own.
MR. H:Now most of us know by now that Mya is Laurie's co-worker at the Java Hole. But tell us a bit more about the character of Mya Rockwell from an in-depth standpoint.
Brea:This film happens a few years after the original Halloween and Laurie is experiencing the psychological aftermath of the deaths of her friends and family. She's on a downward spiral. Mya is her new best friend, a sort of more punk and trouble-making counterpart to Annie. She watches Laurie spin out of control and attempts to stop her.
MR. H:Considering that Annie (Danielle Harris) is Laurie's (Scout Taylor Compton) friend, and you also play Laurie's friend/co-worker, is there any heat or animosity between your character of Mya and Danielle's character of Annie, as in kind of a territorial thing?
Brea:No - I think in many ways Mya has replaced Annie because Laurie is searching for a darker, more crazy group of friends. There is definitely some animosity between Annie and Laurie though that shows the way in which the two characters deal with their problems differently.
MR. H:How big is your role in the movie, and how long was the shoot in ATL Georgia for you?
Brea:I'm in a good chunk of the movie and I was in Georgia for about 4 weeks.
MR. H:Does your character of Mya Rockwell get a memorable confrontation with Michael Myers? Does she put up a fight?
Brea:I think you'll just have to see!
MR. H:Have you seen the final cut yet of "H2"? How scary would you say it is?
Brea:I have seen bits and pieces of H2 but I don't think I'll see the final cut before the premiere. From what I've seen, it looks really, really scary.
MR. H:What was it like working with/for Rob Zombie?
Brea:Rob's really cool. He's really willing to try to new things and let the actors play around with their roles a bit. He also has an amazing vision for the movie which I think really shows when people finally get to see it.
MR. H:How does Rob as a director differ from other directors you've worked with in the past?
Brea:Rob is constantly trying to make his movie look like something new and a little gritty. He doesn't want that fresh and polished feel, which I think makes his movies way scarier than a super Hollywood horror film.
MR. H:What was it like working with Scout and Danielle? We've seen some video blogs from the movie online and it seems you guys bonded pretty well.
Brea:Yeah! I didn't get to work with Danielle much but Scout is really sweet and amazingly talented. I hope we get to work together again in the future.
MR. H:"H2" isn't your first horror movie. You also did "Midnight Movie" sometime ago. What was it like working on that one?
Brea:It was cool. I did that one before I did any television. Horror movies are fun because I feel like people get to get really creative. Midnight Movie was great because we shot it in an old movie theater which made it actually scarier.
MR. H:In "H2", you were pretty much surrounded by some legendary actors. Margot Kidder, Brad Dourif, Malcolm Mcdowell, etc. Now you and Malcolm have both done stints on "Heroes" most people know, but what was it like working with him, Brad, Margo, and the other veteran actors on this movie?
Brea:It's always amazing to me how nice people are. I didn't have any screen time with any of those actors but just meeting them behind the scenes was amazing. I feel like I have so much to learn from people like Brad, Margo and Malcolm so I spend a lot of time asking them questions. Malcolm has about a million stories so it's easy to keep him talking for a while.
MR. H:Three part question here, one....do you have any battle scars from filming on "H2"? A lot of the women in those movies usually always admit coming away with a few scrapes and bruises. Two, what were some of your favorite moments on set with the cast? And three, what were some of your favorite scenes to film?
Brea:I did end up with a few bruises here and there but nothing too terrible. It was a really safe set and I had a stunt double for anything too crazy.
Some of my favorite moments happened outside of set just hanging out with Scout and Angela (who plays another of Laurie's friends). Those girls are hilarious and it's just fun to spend some time with intelligent, funny women.
There is a huge Halloween party we go to in the film that took two days to shoot and it was amazing. It felt like a real party with a real band. All the extras were locals who came dressed up in the most amazing Halloween costumes I've ever seen! It was a surreal experience to spend all day at a crazy party.
MR. H:You're appearing in another upcoming horror movie, Brad Malone and John Fallon's "Trance", with Dominique Swain and Jeremy London. Now we know that one is about some partiers who get introduced to a new drug that turns them into blood-thirsty killers. But tell us about your role in it, and when can we expect that one to reach cinemas, dvd, or whatever?
Brea:I actually filmed Trance a while back, before Heroes even. It's just one of those movies stuck in post-production hell. It was one of the most fun movie experiences of my life though. I played a girl who rollerblades around a party and kills people. Like I said, fun.
MR. H:Non-horror related question here. Is your character Daphne done for good on "Heroes"? Or will she be back zipping around all over the place in season 4?
Brea:She's gone for good! But I hear Season Four will be amazing!
End.
