FEAR ITSELF Review: Episode 7 - "Community"

"Fear Itself" episode number 7, "Community". What to say about this episode? How about...it sucks?? It really is the weakest episode so far of the series. Even far weaker than "The Sacrifice"...which in itself was a very problematic episode. The episode follows a young couple who move into a nice quiet suburb. Well...atleast it seems nice and quiet at first. But there is an underlying sinister tone to the people within and the community itself. They all seem very sweet and nice....too sweet and nice in fact. Of course, this episode plays off of the logic that the couple, played by Shiri Appleby, and Brandon Routh...are simply too wowed by the niceness of the community members to even care about how suspicious they are.

One of the biggest problems with this episode is it's so obvious to see how it's gonna turn out. You can see 98% of the ending coming from a mile away, with a 2% surprise factor....that ain't good. Even from the opening scene it's obvious how this thing will play out and then wrap up. Routh and Appleby are also not cut out for horror. The two of them are just the most lackluster and uncharismatic actors you could ever hope not to see on screen. Their performanc in the episode wasn't moving, entertaining, or anything except boring. But I wouldn't put the entire blame on them. The episode itself has major issues. Script was extremely flawed for one. Nothing exciting happens in the episode, and everything that transpires with the community, as their dark side starts to come out more and more is highly predictable.

We're also never told what is exactly "going on" with the community. All we get is a bunch of extremely "suburban" people with a Jim Jones complex. These people are always smiling, happy, and pretty much ready to drink the kool-aid if told to do so. This is all fine and dandy but one would atleast like to know why they are the way they are. But it's never revealed. Are they brainwashed? Are they aliens? We never find out, but we sure do NOT have alot of fun trying to guess which one it is. Other than the large, nice-looking suburban setting....this episode really has no redeeming value at all. It's a total snoozer, and if you fall asleep 10 minutes in and wake up 10 minutes before it's over you wouldn't have missed much other than some sad attempts at being creepy, weird, or ominous.

"Community" doesn't really do anything new or original, considering the suburbs themselves are sort of like a creepy cult full of smiling -all-the-time people....some suburbs anyways. So what's supposed to be scary about this episode? When someone lets me know, you'll know...trust me. But I doubt I'll ever get the answer to that question in this lifetime. They really should've put this episode first. I do not think there'll be a weaker episode this season than "Community". Instead, they put 5 terrific episodes first before laying this sleep-inducing piece of crap upon us. Talk about building up the card house and then blowing it down with a giant fan.
