My Thoughts:Not as well-versed as "Gingerdead Man"

Review:Oddly enough, Charles Band and Fullmoon decided to put out a sequel to one of their more and most creative efforts to date, I felt...since "Blood Dolls". 2005's "Gingerdead Man", the Gary Busey starrer which had Busey playing a psycho-killer who is killed but reanimated within the dough of a gingerbread cookie. He then proceeds to go on a killing spree at a local bakery and is finally defeated in the end after he possesses the last dude left alive in the movie.

Now..he's back. This time on the set of a low-budget horror film. The film has it's own problems however, the same problems any low budget film has. Annoyed actors, difficult actors, and a producer who has no idea what the hell he's doing. Things get worse when the gingerdead man shows up inside a box full of pastries. He soon picks up where he left off, slashing through the cast and crew, spilling blood, and looking for a way to complete a sacrifice which would allow him to gain a human host body which he can continue his murderous ways in. However...this proves to be easier said than done.

I wasn't really big on this particular sequel, and I'm not sure if it was because there wasn't as much gingerdead mayhem as there was in part one, or was it because of the new director Silvia St. Croix, and new writer William Butler. Unlike part one, which had Band directing, and August White scripting based off of Butler's story...this film had Butler scripting, and no Charlie Band at all. It showed, and the movie...while it had a few zingers here and there dialogue wise, had alot of envelope pushing dialogue that came off more as childish and perverted instead of clever and witty in a dark sort of way.

"Blood Dolls" for example, had some of the best dialogue I've ever sene to date in a Fullmoon movie made beyond the year 2000. Also Busey voiced the gingerdead man the first time around, but is replaced in the sequel by John Vulich. Vulich does an excellent job voicing the character and bringing him to life, but alas...it was missing the dark edge of Busey's voice. Too much time is spent in this film on the production of the low-budget movie also. The characters aren't really that interesting, and their whole schtick or either screaming, cursing, yelling, or arguing gets old fast.

It kind of makes you wish that they had the gingerdead man get to the slicing and dicing early on, and makes you relieved when he finally does start slicing and dicing everyone. Which is when this movie really gets going...when the gingerdead man begins offing members of the cast and crew, and soon targets the studio head and producer of the film, along with a woman from a special needs organization who has brought along a young man to the set to meet with real live movie stars. There's a pretty funny underlying twist to the special needs kid however, which I won't spoil here...but it's about as clever as this movie gets.

There's not as much blood and gore in "Passion Of The Crust" as there was in "Gingerdead Man", but it's still present in spurts in certain parts of the movie. The deaths are good enough, with the exception of one that was just too weird for me. The finale of the film is quite strong, with the gingerdead man finally cornering his final two victims...who seem doomed with no one around to rescue them...or are they? The way things wrap up are pretty damn funny I must admit.

"Gingerdead Man" is a film most will enjoy on some level if you don't take it too seriously (and who could really). While the characters in 2 are not as strong or remotely likeable as the ones in the first film, the gingerdead man himself does just enough slicing, dicing, and joke-cracking to carry the movie to the notch of "decent schlock entertainment".

Positives:Vulich does a pretty good job stepping in for Busey as the Gingerdead Man. Most of the deaths were good, the ending was a great watch, clever twist with the special needs guy.

Negatives:Too many annoying characters, The gingerdead man doesn't wreak havoc fast enough.

Overall:2 and a half stars out of four.
