My Thoughts:Indie horror, minus the charm.
Review:"Hanger", is indie horror at it's most pure. It lacks class, good taste, tact, political correctness, all of those things. Problem is, the film doesn't lack these things because of it's indie charm, it lacks those things because it purposely tries to be offensive. Tries way too hard in fact. The film follows a prostitute (Rochon), who has an abortion but things don't work out as planned, and the kid is born a hideous, deformed retard basically.
The child, which is the product of the prostitute and her pimp Leroy, is then taken in by the prostitute's "other love", so to speak. He then uses the child, HANGER's, bloodlust, to plot revenge against Leroy the pimp. The movie jumps back and forth to telling the story of HANGER, and how his crappy life unfolds as he's soon forced to work at a garbage dump. While Leroy the pimp works the streets using the ladies at his disposal.
The movies conflict is basically between the redneck guy the protitutes "other love" who is really HANGER's father, and Leroy the pimp. Leroy is a uch better villain, than the redneck who is basically just your typical racist, white trash inbred type. The problem with the film though is it's desperation to copy from the stuff Troma used to do. You can really see the Troma influence in the movie, and Lloyd Kaufman even makes a cameo in the picture.
But while I didn't particularly find any of Troma's stuff as witty, and socially relevant as some other horror fans do, "Hanger" is even less than that. The film just fails on every attempt at humor or wit. Like I said, it tries to be Troma material, playing on the themes of race, class, gender, etc. But in reality, it just comes off as a very gross, disgusting, and repulsive product. For one, the acting is terrible. Debbie Rochon appears early on in the film, but we don't see her after that.
Then the film begins relying on no-name actors and various "who's", when it comes to acting talent. Thus, we're left with quite a mess of a movie to try and digest. The film also trots out the usual racial stereotypes. The subservient Asian guy, who talks funny, and never shows any anger despite being berated, the black pimp, and on and on. While I personally don't consider myself a person who's easily offended by this stuff, the blatant attempt at humor which fails miserably should be apologized for.
Nothing worse than trying to make the audience laugh, and doing a bad job of it. Blood and gore are basically non-existent in this movie unless you're talking about people getting shot or something. There is a scene where a main character is tortured, and has their face barbecued with a blow-torch, but beyond that, this movie relies on gross out humor, retardedness, and stupidity to try and chug itself along on a very rickety, old wagon of bad writing, and terrible innuendo.
The production values are also super low, but trust me, that's the least of this films worries. The biggest of which being it's just, not funny. Take a movie like "Seed Of Chucky" for example. Whether you liked it or not, you can't deny it had some funny and twisted humor. And you don't need high production values to get a good script done. If "Seed Of Chucky" had been made for $900, it still would've been funny.
Why? Because the script, was funny. Ryan Nicholson, who wrote and directed this movie, along with previous horror titles such as "Live Feed", and "Gutterballs", has some talent in directing and writing a good script. But he totally misses the mark with "Hanger". In some ways, the film almost seems beneath him when you compare it to the two films I just mentioned. Nicholson needs to get back to basics. Not sure what went wrong with "Hanger", but in all honesty...Nicholson can do better....way better.
Positives:Debbie Rochon's early appearance.
Negatives:Poor script which negatively affects and spreads through the entire movie, choking the life out of it like a quick-moving poison.
Overall:One star out of four.
