Horror movies &stuff Interviews "Brotherhood Of Blood" star Ken Foree
HM&S.com chatted recently with Ken Foree, star of Peter Scheerer and Michael Roesch's vampire/actioneer "Brotherhood Of Blood", which is now available on DVD. In the film, Foree plays Stanis, one of the more complex vampires in the film, who may or may not be what he seems to be on the surface.
MR. H:What was it about the script for "Brotherhood Of Blood" that made you want to be a part of the film?
Ken:I've wanted to play an evil creature. I never have and the anti-hero/creature/evil character roles are fun and can be the most interesting and creative. And I wanted to suck blood! (just kidding!)
MR. H:Are you generally a fan of vampire films from a viewer standpoint?
Ken:Yes, I love Bela Lugosi, Frank Langella and Tom Cruise to name a few. And let's not forget the great Christopher Lee.
MR. H:Tell us about your character in the film, Stanis.
Ken:Well, in the film you think that I'm one of the truly evil blood sucking characters. It almost happens in "Brotherhood of Blood", but alas, it turned out that Standis is not the evil blood sucking villain but a misunderstood well meaning creature who is a member of a Vampire sect whose only desire is to live with humanity and to find a way to co-habitate.
MR. H:Being listed in the top three of the cast, pretty much means Stanis is an intricate part of the film. So tell us about some of the standout scenes your character gets to participate in, and any really cool stuff he gets to do in the film.
Ken:I'm being torched during 98% of my appearance in this film. I was chained to a table for five days. Sorry nothing excting or romantic, just pure discomfort and pain.
MR. H:Vampire movies are usually very bloody, while there are a few that go more towards the dramatic, and skimp on the blood. What kind of vampire movie is "Brotherhood Of Blood" in that regard? Very bloody, or more reserved?
Ken:Both. There are some extremely bloody scenes, but it doesn't distract or lure our focus away from the story. The intrigue and suspense is still there.
MR. H:You're working with Sid Haig again in this film. How much fun did the two of you have playing your respective characters in scenes you filmed together?
Ken:Unfortunately, Sid and I didn't have any scenes together.
MR. H:Did you get a chance to be behind-the-scenes and watch any of the other actors work? If so, who of the young up and comers in the cast do you see being a star really soon?
Ken:No I didn't get a chance to watch any of the other actors shoot their scenes. I did see the rough cut and enjoyed many of the performances.
MR. H:How is it working with Peter Scheerer and Michael Roesch, two guys who are coming up really fast in the genre?
Ken:It was a good experience. We collaborated and I think we have brought a wonderfully evil, frightning, and insane group of characters to the scene.
MR. H:You also make an appearance in "30 Days Of Night:Dust To Dust", the webisode series based on "30 Days Of Night". What character do you play? How many episodes do you appear in? And has your episode or episodes aired online yet?
Ken:I play a reprehensible trailer trash individual. Only one episode and it has aired online.
MR. H:Webisodes and webseries are a growing trend when it comes to the horror genre. There seems to be more and more of them coming out every year. What do you think of this new trend, and do you think it gives actors a chance to perform their craft without having to deal with the awful political side of the film business? Which is something Shawnee Smith stated in an interview recently.
Ken:This trend has been going on for about 5 to 7 years and everyone is trying to find a way to make it profitiable. It certainally is the wave of the future and that's why everyone is anixous to launch a series online. Studio production companies, independents and ordinary people are working in their mothers' basement. Everyone realizes where the market will be in a few years and they want to make sure that they are current or ahead of the trend. If you want my view on the political studio system.........I'd have to kill you after.
MR. H:You also star in a few other upcoming horror projects such as "Cut Print", "Live Evil", another vampire film..."Zone Of The Dead" a zombie movie, and "Bind"...where you work with Devon Sawa again. Tell us about those forthcoming projects and your role in each of them.
Ken:I haven't seen any of them. A lot of people will use your name to advertise their product event, film or anything. It's just one of the ugly spots you have to address and move on.
MR. H:You've worked with Rob Zombie pretty often in "Halloween", "The Devil's Rejects", and the upcoming animated film "The Haunted World of El Superbeasto". Which leads me to this question...we recently saw a piece of teaser art from Rob's next project "Tyrannosaurus Rex", and saw a character on that poster holding an AK-47, who could pretty much pass as a dead ringer for you. So has there been any discussions about you possibly coming aboard "T-Rex"?
Ken:Rob and I haven't met to talk about me being a part of his new venture. As I've said before, Rob is great and I'd work with him again in a heartbeat.
MR. H:What other upcoming horror projects are you in early talks to appear in..."Brotherhood Of Blood 2" perhaps??
Ken:Yes, Brotherhood of Blood II sounds good! I don't like to talk about up and coming film opportunities until I've signed a contract and the deal is secure. Plus it is sometimes unlucky to count your chickens, so all I'll say is there are a few interesting offers being made between now and April 2009.
MR. H:Will you eventually move on to directing a film or two??
Ken:Yes, that is definitely next for me. Directing is a strong suit for me. I relate well to actors and writers and have been told that I tell interesting, engaging and sometimes enchanting stories. So I'm excited for a chance to tell it on the screen.
MR. H:What are some 2009 horror films that you personally are looking forward to seeing?
Ken:Are you kidding me! I'm still trying to get over "Hard Candy and "Inside".
