[Monsters]
Plot:Five years after Earth has suffered an alien invasion a cynical journalist agrees to escort a shaken tourist through an infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the US border.
Cast:Whitney Able,
Scoot Mcnairy.
My Thoughts:Monsterously bad.
Review:"Monsters" is a movie I knew going in wouldn't be all it was cracked up to be. I think the film was made solely because everyone now seems to be out to capitalize on the "Cloverfield" craze. Which despite being almost 3 years old, is still giving many filmmakers these ideas. The movie is set in a hypothetical world, where extraterrestrial octopus-like creatures, have attacked earth.
The infected zone is near Mexico, which is where a journalist agrees to escort a young female tourist across the border and back into the states. This movie made no sense, and I still don't know why it was made. It just seemed so pointless to me really. It served no purpose, other than to be one of those movies that gets a lot of hype by showing very little, and thus tricking people into paying to see it. "Carriers" played the same game, and I hated that movie too.
"Monsters" wanders around aimlessly, not giving us anything to enjoy or go on, beyond the opening scene where military types battle the aliens, and the ending where the aliens make another appearane. But in between the beginning and end, there's nothing to get excited about here. The film is more of a character driven drama, and will surely pop up on SyFy or ABC family some day. That's just how lame and uneventful it is. It's so unscary and uninteresting.
Granted, I don't expect to get scared by horror films these days, but atleast give me something to get the adrenaline pumping. But "Monsters" just lags, drags, and drudges it's way to a finale that begs the question...WTF??? The way the movie ends is even retarded. I am not exactly sure what the director wanted to convey with "Monsters". Was it an experiment in Scifi/horror? Was it an attempt at alien invasion horror gone horribly wrong? Was it made because someone lost a bet?
Or was it one of those movies made just so a filmmaker can get his name out there for other potential projects? I am not sure, but the film is all glitz and glamour. It teases monsters, yet never delivers. You keep waiting for someone to get wacked by an alien, but that moment never comes. Hell, I would've been satisfied if atleast one of the titular "Monsters"...had somersaulted through the air just to let the viewer know aliens are lurking near by.
But instead, this film is just an episode of ''Survivor" meets "Independence Day". I can't even judge the performances because there wasn't much acting. Just dialogue that went nowhere except over a cliff, and the film could've worked hd the two main characters just exchanged a few grunts every now and then, just to let the other know they're still alive. I'd advise any scifi/horror, horror, or scifi fan to stay away from "Monsters". This movie shouldn't be viewed by anyone who doesn't need a good nights sleep.
Positives:When the end credits rolled.
Negatives:Bad script, a title that teases creatures but never delivers. Boring characters who were also quite intolerable, and an overall lack of entertainment value.
Overall:Half a star out of four stars.
