The "Carrie" Remake, is it time?

Let me start off first by saying, that I don't approve of remakes at all. Unless they're remakes of old 70's or 80's horror films. That had super-low budgets. Budgets so low, that they couldn't do the film justice. Or...that the movies were lambasted by critics and genre fans alike. Thus, a melding of both sides. Resulting in the overall label of...We Hated It. And of course, the scenario in which a movie came in the era before they started shooting movies in actual color. But with that being said, these days...you kind of have to just "tolerate", alot of these current remakes of old horror movies that are coming and going lately. The latest though, and possibly most insulting. Is MGM's remake of Stephen King's 1976 horror classic, "Carrie". Directed by Brian De Palma. Based on King's original story, and written for the screen by Lawrence D. Cohan...the movie centered on a young girl named Carrie White.

Her torment was endless. Her mother, an abusive, hyper-religious wackjob. Kept her very sheltered. And when Carrie did go out, it was to school. Where she was picked on constantly by the other girls for not being as pretty and popular as they were. Starring a young John Travolta, PJ Soles, Piper Laurie, Nancy Allen, and of course, Sissy Spacek...the movie painted a frightening portrait of what can happen when someone is pushed too far. And in the case of Carrie White, a teen who unbeknownst to her, possessed the power of telekenesis. Or, the ability to move objects by using the human mind. Messing with her turned out to be a fatal mistake. As the bloody ending of the movie would soon prove. The prom scene in "Carrie" was one of the genre's many memorable horror moments. And is always mentioned as many peoples (myself included)...personal favorites as well.

Carrie (2002) But the themes touched on in "Carrie" mostly dealt with being a teenager. Confused about life, and of course when stuff just flips over and or flies around you. If you don't know how or why? It's even worse! Especially when your own mother thinks you're the spawn of the devil for possessing these powers. One of the other themes was bullying. And how it can lead to a tragic end for the aggressors. Now, in 2012...we prepare for MGM. Who own the rights to the franchise.

And have never let them go after all these years, to remake the original. But "Carrie" was first remade back in 2002. And starred Angela Bettis, Katharine Isabelle, Kandyse McClure, and Patricia Clarkson. Just to name a few. Which is why some people are confused as to why "Carrie" is being remade, again. But what some people don't know, is that "Carrie" 2002...was originally planned to be a television series. And the so-called remake, was actually a pilot episode. Eventually released as a modern-day-retelling since NBC decided to abort the project early in the game. Hence, it can kind of, be ignored as a genuine remake of the 1976 version. But in 2013, we will apparently get an actual remake, of the 1976 movie. Starring one Chloe Moretz. Moretz, who's no stranger to the genre. Having done a remake of the Swedish vampire film "Let Me In". Wasn't an early favorite for the role. As interest in it came from two bigger stars Megan Fox and Lindsay Lohan. While both are bigger in the terms of Lohan's infamy, and earlier promising roles. And Fox's appearance in both loud and noisy "Transformers" films.

In the end, it seems like MGM decided to go with substance instead. Choosing Moretz. Who is certainly not an unknown. But for the 18 and up demo this movie will be appealing to. Fox and Lohan are most likely more recognized. You have to wonder though, in 2012. And a period of time where bullying in schools is running amok on kids these days. If this movie will either center on, dance around somewhat, or totally focus like a laser...on tieing itself into today's society of face-to-face bullying. And the stealth and phantom online bullying that goes on. I mean...compared to the 70's, all kinds of things can be done with the new "Carrie" movie. Like a scenario where Carrie makes someone's head explode via WebCam chat? Or where she texts an enemy posing as someone else. Only to lure them to a darkened parking garage. Where she proceeds to toss actual cars at them. As part of a twisted version of dodgeball or something?

Carrie (1976)

And speaking of which. Will we see a vengeful Carrie in the remake? Will she come into her powers, own them, and then use them early and often? To get even with her tormentors? Instead of the scared, frightened Carrie we saw in the original? Who was freaked out by her abilities? Or will the new Carrie have tormentors at all? Will she be an evil girl with abilities. Who someone else, has to subsequentially put down? All of these are hypotheticals of course. Including the obligatory Sissy Spacek cameo (Heh). But the biggest question many will have is...will this remake actually be good? Or will it stink to high heaven? Well, one thing it has going in its favor is that MGM is behind it. United Artists released the first film back in '76. UA then went on to merge with MGM. And way back in the early 2000's, they put out "The Rage:Carrie 2". A movie that most people hated, but come on, that house-party-of-doom scene at the end more than made up for everything that came before.

Moretz in Let Me In (2010)

So we do know that this remake is being kept within mostly, the same family that the original was born from way back in '76. So this isn't some fledgling studio looking to strike it rich on their first real project. The casting of Moretz was also a step in the right direction. It says they're taking this movie seriously. And lets hope for Stephen King's sake they are. After all, he's got enough to worry about with CBS Films in-the-works remake of "The Stand" lurking overhead. The last thing he needs is to wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat. Worrying about a remake of one of his best efforts ever, in "Carrie". Another positive sign, is that Kimberly Peirce is directing. And while all directors are capable of having a dud or two, the fact that Peirce hasn't come out of the music-video realm, is already a major plus.

Carrie (1976) ending But back to the remakes subject matter. I personally hope that the movie does not over-extend itself on the issues of bullying. That it sticks to its horror roots. And doesn't become some after-school-special or PSA on why kids shouldn't bully other kids. At the same time, I would be shocked if the remake just went all out on the blood and gore, and pulls a "Scanners" on us. But is, it time for a remake like this to tackle these issues? Does this movie come at a perfect time in today's society where bullying seems to be the thing to do? Will it even try to tackle that subject? Or will it just avoid it altogether. Thus leaving viewers to project...a little bit? Or a whole lot?

Either way...I'm not really expecting a preachy crybaby movie. Nor am I expecting "Friday The 13th Part 3" either. I think this remake will be somewhere in between script wise. With Moretz performance anchoring its weaknesses. Which should work. As long as they aren't too many of them. Or any glaring ones. In the end, if there was one horror remake to be grudgingly hopeful about, "Carrie" would be it. In my opinion atleast.
