[Necromentia]
Plot:Necromentia tells the stories of 3 men whose lives have been turned over by the existence of a tattooed Ouija Board and the gateways they open with it. Hagen is a strange character who keeps the corpse of his lover in his house, believing that one day she will come back from the dead. But when he meets a mysterious man named Travis, he soon learns that maybe he could be the one who goes into hell and bring her back from the dead. Once Travis carves the Ouija Board from his back, there is no going back as Hagen comes face to face with the monstrosities of the creatures within hell. But does Travis really want to help Hagen, or does he have other plans?

My Thoughts:Strange indie.
Review:"Necromentia" is another indie genre piece, that explores what goes wrong when people try and use the occult and it's powers, for the wrong purposes. Of course, the people in this movie aren't really good people to begin with. Which is the interesting part of it all. It's probably the first horror film I've seen where everyone is pretty much in line to get what they deserve.
The story begins when a man is seen tending to his lover, who obviously looks dead and decomposed. Soon, he's acosted by two men who request that he help them in exchange for them bringing his lover back from the dead. It turns out to be a trick however, and the man becomes the pawn in a game of dark magic. One of the men who offered him the deal, has his own ideas of who to "bring back", and why. This movie is all about loss really, and the lengths that some people will go to - to get back someone that they've lost.
But it also shines the light on things that you can't take back, and how when someone ends up dead because of your personal actions, any attempt to reunite with them through the wrong methods, will ultimately end up damning you right along with them. This film has some decently deep underlying messages, although I'm not sure whether they were intentional or unintentional. Either way, it's a good thing for a small film like this. The directing is also very gothic, and fits right into the movies overall tone and story.
The characters fit the story and tone as well. They are all seemingly depressed and hardluck people. They have money problems, love problems, and related issues. Most of the characters seem to be one step away from suicide, and the movie itself has a suicidal and dark feel around it. You could call it a goth/emo horror movie, but it tries to be deeper than that by crafting a pretty good story for itself. Scene wise, the film is pretty twisted and effective in disturbing and freaking out the viewer.
There's a particular set of scenes involving one of the characters younger brother, and an imaginary character wearing a pig mask. The way these scenes unfold, and the ultimate end result, is a very disturbing circa. The way the scenes are filmed also make them really effective, and while there's a lot to be depressed about in this movie, as long as you remember that the film is trying to tell a story, and not dictate, or send any kind of crazy 70's-ish message, you should find "Necromentia" to be quite a crazy ride.
I also have to give props to the actors, who performed their parts quite well for a small-budget film, and the movie itself draws a lot of comparisons to "Hellraiser" with it's dark and hopeless players, the harlot-esque female character, and a lot of self mutilation aspects that are touched upon throughout the pic.
The creature fx are pretty awesome also, and yes, this movie does sport a nasty-looking creature in more than one scene, and for a small-financed pic, it does an excellent job with the monster. "Necromentia" is a very ambitious production, and pretty much accomplishes what it sets out to do, which is disturb, and psychologically trip-out the viewer. As well as tell quite the twisted story.
Positives:Decent performances, good creature fx, very nicely dark story, some very disturbing scenes, and good directing.
Negatives:The film ends somewhat abruptly, but it's not enough to ruin the overall experience.
Overall:Three and a half out of four stars.
