My Thoughts:Neojunk!
Review:"Neowolf" is another indie attempt at good or atleast modestly decent werewolf horror. Unlike a "Ginger Snaps" or "Cursed" however, this movie just has no clue. "Neowolf" follows an Eastern European rock band named "Neowolf". Cliche number one, all rock bands in America are apparently the brooding Eastern-European types. The band plays music by day, and by night, well...they transform into lycans and kill and eat people.
Pretty decent gig they have going for themselves, until they lose a bandmate. That's when they begin seeking out new talent. They find said talent in an aspiring musician named Tony, who has just returned home to make things right with his girlfriend. But he gets sidetracked by the bands sultry female lead singer. Soon, one thing leads to another, and he becomes more and more sucked into the world of the brooding band, and his girlfriend Rosemary puts a plan into action to save him. But is it already too late?
Well, it was too late for this film, and a lot of things in it. Too late for movies about werewolf rock bands, should've saved that stuff for the 80's, which are long gone. Or atleast the cheesy early 90's, which gave us "Night Of The Demons 2" and "3", and a few other video store classics. But in 2010, a film like this isn't cool, hip, or even entertaining. It's just one of those films that makes you roll your eyes because it's so by the numbers and predictable.
For example, we know the female werewolf will end up seducing young naive Tony into joining the band. We know Tony will eventually be forced to kill Rosemary in order to become a full-fledged lycan, and we know that the obligatory strange woman who knows all there is to know about werewolves, will show up at some point to clue Rosemary in on what's going on with Tony and the weird ass band he's joining. We know all of this stuff will happen, and the writers know that we know. Yet they still expect us to sit, watch, and cheer for this film.
Well, I just couldn't do it. It wasa nightmare to sit through this 87 minute flaming boat of death. The movie also doesn't try to make the werewolves even remotely interesting. They all brood, wear shades, dress and act like depressed emo types, and do all the usual stuff that a band with some dark secret to hide would do. You can tell they're werewolves without even watching the beginning of the film. That's how predictable and easy to figure out this film is. Anyone walking by the tele, who catches a glimpse of one scene in this movie, would instantly suspect the band members are vampires, werewolves, or one or the other.
And these werewolves hardly kill anyone. They just play really bad music, walk around trying to look and act cool, and occasionally, they'll kill and eat someone. But any good genre afficionado knows a werewolf movie must have constant conflict and violence, and this film had neither. The one small though, teeny, tiny good thing I can say about this movie...is on the subject of the ending.
There's a death at the end that isn't expected to occur, and kind of rewrites the happy/sappy ending rules of a movie like this. But it's too bad the cleverness of the ending, wasn't implemented within the entire 87 minutes of "Neowolf". Instead, we get 6 minutes of good writing and horror-drama, and 80 minutes of headache-inducing crap. If "Neowolf" is playing at a video store near you, might wanna stay home and listen to some CD's instead.
Positives:The ending is cool in it's unpredictability.
Negatives:Everything that comes before the ending is a terrible tragedy. Cliches, lack of entertainment value, the works.
Overall:Half a star out of four.
