[Priest 3D]
Plot:Follows a group of specially trained priests who hunt down vampires in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. One priest in particular however turns against the church to track down a particular band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece.

Cast:Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q, Karl Urban, Stephen Moyer, Lily Collins, Madchen Amick, Brad Dourif, Christopher Plummer, Alan Dale.

My Thoughts:You'll get what you pay for.

Review:"Priest" in 3D, is Scott Stewart's latest attempt to blend horror elements, with eye-popping, breathtaking, Sony-Styled action sequences. It didn't work so well in "Legion", but that's mostly the writers fault. That film. Peter Schink is billed as first writer on the movie so yeah, Stewart has some wiggle room there. But "Priest" is a film where more horror elements are mixed with crazy action sequences. Problem is, the characters in "Priest"...are not as entertaining as the characters in "Legion".

But at the same time, they come off as far less annoying. So I guess that's a plus. The movie begins with a great war between vampires and humans. Now, the world has become a post-apocalyptic wasteland. And humans, are still threatened by the vampire menace. Thus...the catholic church has taken human kind under it's wing. Building fortified cities for them to live in, under the churches protection. Problem is...the church has pretty much programmed these people to believe that they cannot live, eat, sleep, or even breathe...without the churches protection.

And the humans have spent so much time behind these walls, that they have ignored the vampire army building on the other side of it. Meanwhile, a vampire army grows stronger on the ither side of the wall. Led by the villainous Black Hat (Urban). Black Hat's latest salvo, snatching the Priest's (Bettany), niece...and leaving his relatives in a bloody mess. Now...the Priest has betrayed his vow to the church in an attempt to rescue his niece.

But with very little support, and of course being outnumbered...can he actually save her before Black Hat turns her into one of his kind? "Priest" is one of those movies that will allow you to get what you pay for. If you want to see a movie where high-flying wire fighting is done, vampires are ganked in a stylish fashion, threats are thrown around, and everybody dresses in cool futuristic outfits while riding jet bikes...then you will leave the cinema happy.

If you're looking for a super-bloody, intense, scary thrill ride though, ala "30 Days Of Night". You might wanna stay home. "Priest" is for people who love non-hyper-violent/action-packed vampire movies. It's not even an A-typical vamp flick. It's after all, an adaptation of the Tokyo-Pop comic, so it's going more for style than substance. The Priest in the film, played by Paul Bettany...does get some help on his journey to rescue his niece. In the form of Cam Gigandet and Maggie Q. Q (Nikita), being a Priestess...who possesses otherwordly fighting abilities. She was originally sent to find Priest and bring him back to the fortress.

But once they meet...and he lays the situation down to her...she switches sides and ends up aiding him on his journey. The film operates in the usual fashion, with Priest having to cut his way through numerous vamps to get to Black Hat. Who stays on the move with Priest's niece in tow. The film eventually sets up a finale on a boxcar train, where Priest and Black Hat are finally let loose to throw down with one another. In typical Scott Stewart movie fashion. I.E. cool visuals, air-assaults, etc. While all of this is happening, Priestess is left to deal with Black Hat's minions, who really aren't that great at their minioning...considering the fact that she disposes of them quite easily.

"Priest" is low on blood and gore, and graphic violence. The film reaches it's level of propensity with a scene ripped from the good book, where Black Hat has crucified some of Priest's fellow Priest's as a message to his adversary. But "Priest 3D", although cool-looking in 3D, is a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing really. It's a movie that starts off nicely, and ends decently. But everything in between is forgettable and will probably be forgotten considering Bettany's character is always so stoic and stone-faced throughout most of the picture.

And Karl Urban as Black Hat gets little screentime. Nor is he very interesting or scary as a villain. He comes off more as a sadistic rambling vampire. Not much of what he says makes sense. And the usual grudges are displayed. He hates human beings for hating vampires because he see shumanity as more corrupt and violent than any vampire will ever be. Thus his killing spree rests on a disgust at being judged and pursued by the good guys. Can't tell you how many vampire movies have made the head vamp into a sympathetic type.

"Priest" is just the latest to do so. Overall, the film will come and go in cinemas quite quickly I'm sure. Nothing is very special about this movie. But for action-heads who love movies that are set in post-apocalyptic wastelands. And futuristic fetishists who dig one-man-army types of films where the good guy slices and cies monsters to get to the boss monster/main baddie..."Priest" will be a godsend. But for horror lovers like me, it's just another one of "those"...vampire movies. Not necessarily terrible, but not very good or solidly written either.

Positives:Bettany and Q give decent performances. The finale/final battle is good popcorn entertainment. The ending is cool too.

Negatives:Cam Gigandet's character is terrible as the proverbial comic relief. Not many memorable or cool action sequences. Urban's character doesn't get enough screentime, and as a vampire villain...he's very cliche in his motives for murder.

Overall:Two and a half stars out of four.
