Review:So when we last left off in "Saw 4", Hoffman was revealed to have been Jigsaw's apprentice when he forced Rigg to play a game....a game which he failed at in the end, resulting in the death of Eric Matthews. Now Hoffman gets a weird note which reads "I Know Who You Are". His secret is threatened...so he now is on the job, trying to find out who sent him the note and he intends to take them out before they can alert the authorities. I being a huge "Saw" fan liked this film within the context of the traps.
The traps were better than the ones in part 4. I loved 4, but I'll admit the traps were shit. The only good one being the ice-block trap which resulted in Eric being smashed up. By the way, in "Saw V"....the people left alive at the end of "Saw 4" have their fates revealed. Some people will find the revelations shocking and sad, others probably won't care. But one character who is revealed to be dead made me kind of angry. The plot has alot of connections with part 2, where Xavier, Jonas, Laura, Daniel, Obi, the dude who got a hole in his head, and Addison had to work together to get the antidote to the virus.
In "Saw V"...another group of people, although alot more high up on the societal food chain than the gangsters, drug dealers, and hookers from two...find themselves involved in another Jigsaw-styled game where they must work together or end up dead. So what happens? Well they fail to work together, again. But I won't reveal if they all die or not, but yeah that whole working together thing? So was "not" happening. Julie Benz and Meagan Good give the best performances out of the new "recruits".
Hoffman's search for who left him the note circles around Agent Strahm from part 4, but we also learn that the traps have an edge to them. Some of them are created for certain people to ensure that they die, fail, whatever. While others are created just to test people, and ensure they advance to the next stage. There's a character in the film who is heavily involved in all of this drama with the traps, and it kind of lends to a theory that maybe Amanda was not doing all the moving and shaking in earlier films, i.e. kidnapping Adam, Jeff, etc.
But what I didn't like was the constant flashbacking to Jigsaw's dialogue with various people, and also they decided to sidetrack us with Jill, Jigsaw's main squeeze who it seems at the end of "Saw V"....is set up for a huge role in part 6. All in all "Saw V" ranks behind parts 1 and 2 in my book. It's about break even with three and far better than part 4 because of the traps. The ending is mind-boggling, not crazy awesome like part 2's ending was, nor part three's ending. Part V has one of the weakest endings from an action standpoint, but psychologically it does just fine. I'd rate "Saw V" a 9.0 out of 10.
