2010's Best and Worst Horror Movies

2010 is this close to being done and over with, so it's time to break out our annual Best and Worst Horror Movies list! HM&S.com's Best and Worst Horror Movies list is in it's third year currently, and as for 2010's genre releases...well, it's certainly been an "interesting" year. But overall, not a very strong one when it comes to the cream of the horror crop. First up, we had After Dark Horrorfest's Horrorfest 4, which arrive in January around the country. It was ADF's fourth slate of genre releases, where they put out 8 films which allegedly, are "to die for". While this years Horrorfest certainly had it's failures, it overall could be considered a slight success as well. "Kill Theory" was one of the eight films. A movie which I had seen long before Horrorfest 4. I personally didn't like the movie all that much, and I absolutely hated "The Reeds", another Horrorfest 4 entry.

The Graves "Dread", the third of the eight films was an average try, while "The Final", the fourth of the eight movies, was terrific. "Zombies Of Mass Destruction", "Lake Mungo", and "Hidden" however...were all total disasters. But Brian Pulido's "The Graves" was a good time. So does Horrorfest 4 get a best or worst grade from me? Well actually, I'd call the entire slate a "Tweener". But ONLY, because of "The Final", which caught me by surprise at how good it was as a horror film with a human edge, and as a slight message movie. So our first on the list of 2010's Best and Worst, escapes with a mid-card rating.

Next up, we had "Daybreakers", Hollywood's latest attempt at a vampire movie. This one had a good cast, with Ethan Hawke and Sam Neill leading things. Although at times dry in action and any real excitement from it's story, the movie was smart in many areas, and had some intriguing sequences and twists along the way. It scrapes by with a "Best" rating from me. Next up as "Legion", a film which manages somehow to waste acting talent such as Tyrese Gibson, Dennis Quaid, Charles S. Dutton, and Paul Bettany. Wasting them by delivering a story that needed two hours at most to tell, but instead was slashed and burned for a 90 minute shoot em' up mess. With one of the most ridonkulous endings of all time might I add. "Legion" gets a "Worst" rating from this horror movie fan, simply because the storytelling aspect was so obviously lazy. 2010 also marked the release of three long-anticipated sequels. "REC 2", "The Descent Part 2", and "Cabin Fever 2:Spring Fever."

"REC 2" gets a "Best" from me, for it's ratcheting up of the action in it's followup to the events which occured in "REC", and for also delivering a good time, and a great lead in for the third film. "Cabin Fever 2" however gets a big fat "Worst" from me, for utterly failing to be as entertaining as it's predecessor. Of course, "CF 2" had issues with Lionsgate and Ti West and different cuts of the movie being shelved and released so you can chalk this particular "Worst" up to the usual Hollywood politics. "The Descent Part 2" gets a "Best" label from me, for it's continuity, something many sequels seem to pride themselves on lacking these days. And it's retainment of the claustrophobic and suspenseful elements of it's predecessor. Remakes were of course a a part of 2010 as well. "The Wolfman" was the first remake out of the gate this year. The film didn't do much for me, but I respected it's attempt and classic approach to the original "Wolfman". Although it was painful to watch Emily Blunt act in this film, Benicio and Anthony Hopkins performed well enough for me to allow the movie to scrape by with a "Best" rating.

The Wolfman

"The Crazies" was another remake to grace movie screens in 2010. Bringing in a solid cast which consisted of Radha Mitchell and Danielle Panabaker helped the film rise above some of it's glaring issues of slow pacing and long periods of time where it lacked impact. It manages to get by with a "Best" rating from me, for it's strong finale and metamorphosis into character-driven horror. Romero's zombies returned to the genre scene after a long absence with "Survival Of The Dead". Romero's filmmaking is still great in how it manages to tell and capture a story. But this one sinks with a "Worst" label from me simply because the story is so weak and the characters are even weaker. Where's Riley and Charlie when you need em? Horror icon Freddy Kruger made genre fans grab a crucifix yet again, as he returned to the screen in Platinum Dunes remake of "A Nightmare On Elm Street". Despite some questionable casting, and an even more questionable ending, the movie earns "Best" from me because of the brilliant directing, and on the basic levels of an "Elm Street" movie, it worked from a nostalgia point of view. After all, it's been seven years since we last saw anything "Elm Street" related in multiplexes across America.

Nightmare On Elm Street 2010

Strangely, straight-up weirdness was also a part of this years genre basket. Two of the biggest offenders were Tom Sixes "Human Centipede:First Sequence", and a first ever horror/spoof movie solely centered around the "Twilight" films, entitled "Vampires Suck". While "Human Centipede" scrapes by with a "Best" label, for not being a "safe" movie, and for pushing the limits and extremes to the point of practically destroying them, "Vampires Suck" gets the biggest "Worst" of them all...for the simple fact that it sucked...royally. I thought last years December-dump/vampire spoof flick "Transylmania" was bad. But this years August-dump vampire/spoof flick "Vampires Suck"...was far...FAR worse.
Splice "Splice" was yet another weird horror flick to emerge into cinemas this year. Lead by Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley, the film gets a "Best" stamp from me for it's good casting choices, weird creature-feature elements, nice creature fx, and one of the weirdest scenes in genre history! And those of you who've seen the movie already know EXACTLY what I speak of. It earns Best for again, for not being a "safe" movie.

Megan Fox teamed with Josh Brolin to battle the forces of evil in "Jonah Hex", a film adaptation of the DC comic about a scarred Bounty Hunter with supernatural abilities, trying to shutdown a meglomaniac type before he destroys the country. While all of the Megan Fox haters out there would love for me to put the failure of this one squarely on her shoulders, I just cannot do that. The writers get the FULL blame for me labeling this one one of 2010's "Worst". The script was piss poor, and the movie was so short that if you left early in act 1 to get a popcorn and a soda, by the time you returned, the movie had probably ended already. This years summer big genre releases included "Predators", and "The Twilight Saga:Eclipse". Both movies get a "Best" stamp from me. "Predators", for simple prototypical July/early-summer entertainment value. Plus, it was nice to see the Predators back on-screen without the aliens...but doing their thing solo. As for "Twilight:Eclipse", as a person who is not a "Twilight" fan in the least..."Eclipse" atleast was far more graphic violence-wise than it's predecessors. And it also cut down somewhat on the Edward/Bella/Jacob romance angle, which is always a plus with this franchise.

Summer concluded with "Piranha 3D", a remake of the cult classic where killer fish make mincemeat out of partygoers. "Piranha 3D" is one of my "Bests", because it had a terrific cast, high entertainment value, good comedy, and the Jerry O'Connell death scene alone was worth the price of admission. A silly, fun end-of-summer movie. Which is exactly what you look for in cinema in late August. Fall then rolled in and along with it came first and foremost, "The Last Exorcism". Billed as this terrifying, scary, and horrific tale of demons possessing a young girl, I wasn't very impressed, nor scared, nor terrified. But..."TLE" narrowly escapes Worstdom, and enters onto the "Best" list thanks to it's strong and solid finale. Too bad the rest of the movie wasn't as intense though. Next up was "Resident Evil:Afterlife", the fourth entry into the "Resident Evil" franchise. And it's worst one yet. Which is why it gets the dreaded "Worst" stamp from me. The movie simply took absurdity to a whole nother level, and the entire viewing experience felt like an attack on my brain cells.

Resident Evil Afterlife

M. Night Shayamalan's presence was felt in cinemas this year also, when one of his stories was adapted for the big screen in "Devil". The film, which breaks down as one big "whodunit on an elevator"...makes the "Worst" list for it's failure to capitalize on it's rich content. That, and the ending is too predictable and weak. October brought us a slew of genre releases with "Hatchet 2", "Let Me In", the long-held back but finally released..."Case 39", "My Soul To Take", "Paranormal Activity 2", and "Saw 3D:The Final Chapter." All of which earn a "Best" stamp from me. "Hatchet 2" for it's boldness in returning to old-school slasherdom, "Let Me In" for telling a good story and elevating itself (atleast in my opinion), above it's own source material, which was the European vampire pic "Let The Right One In". "My Soul To Take" meanwhile gets Bested by me because of good directing, a strong story, and Wes delivering his usual interesting and quirky teenage characters. Meanwhile, I give "PA 2" and "Saw 3D" Bests because "Paranormal Activity 2" was just as creepy and unsettling, if not more creepy and unsettling, than the first film. And "Saw 3D" put a nice cap on a dynamic and enjoyable franchise of films. That is...if it really is THE END. "Case 39" meanwhile gets a Best from me because even though I saw it long before it was released this past October, as a horror movie with good performances, a good story, and some clever twists, it should still get substantial credit for it's efforts.

Saw 3D

This year of horror then wrapped up with two strong releases to end the year. Which is a surprise considering usually November and December are usually months when studios dump their genre crap into cinemas for a breezy run through before hitting DVD in January of February. But "Skyline", and "Black Swan" were two releases that were heavily promoted. One, because it was riding the tidal wave of regular people versus evil extraterrestrials movies, which seem to be all the rage these days. The other, because Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis were toplining. With Daren Aronofsky behind the camera. But there's not gonna be a double dip here, so sorry to burst your bubble guys. "Skyline" gets a huge "Worst" stamp from me, simply because it squandered so much of it's potential.

Black Swan

And quite frankly, wasn't very well-acted or very well-written. It was a lot of noise, and bright colors. But lacked any real excitement, action, or the entertainment value necessary to coax a friend or two into seeing it. As for "Black Swan"...it gets a "Best" from me for bold storytelling, good performances, and putting forth a nice and intriguing little mystery. Blended in with some small elements of Italian horror, and psychological horror. So that in a nutshell was 2010 in the horror genre. It wasn't as lively as 2009, but it was far more diverse, which is always a plus. But with "The Thing" prequel, "Super 8", and "Paranormal Activity 3" all waiting in the wings...2011 should be an interesting year as well.
