My Thoughts:Interesting vampire film.
Review:Vampire movies as of late have been disasterous. They've failed on so many levels it's laughable. Most vampire movies these days however are coming out of the indie side of things, and they haven't been pretty. "The Insatiable" however takes a new approach to the typical vampire movie, and while it's not anything spectacular, it's heads above "The Thirst", "Revamped", and other indie vampire trash like it.
The film follows a man named Harry Balbo, who lives the normal life of a blue collar worker. His boring, same ole, same ole life however changes when he witnesses a female vampire named Tatiana (Charlotte Ayanna) decapitate a guy in an alley, and then flee after she's spotted. Harry doesn't believe what he's seen at first, but when his neighborhood store clerk turns up at work the next day with a bandage on his neck, Harry then decides to investigate.
His investigation leads him to his clerks apartment, where he encounters the vampiress yet again, only this time she manages to scratch him before he can escape. Now with her having a taste for his blood, it isn't long before she will track him down and kill him like she's done to so many others. Harry then decides to employ the services of a vampire hunter named Strickland (Biehn), he later meets online to help him kill her before she comes for him. "Insatiable"'s plot alone makes it a pretty original vampire piece compared to what's been released as of late.
It takes an original approach to the plot of a vampire movie, and once Harry's plan to kill Tatiana spirals out of control, and goes from hunting her, to trapping her, to feeding her, and then to slightly falling in love with her, it's a pretty entertaining series of events to witness unfold. Ayanna does an excellent job in her role as the hot and darkly intriuging Tatiana, and Flannery plays Harry extremely well also. Which came as a surprise to me considering I haven't been big on his last few performances, especially in "Demon Hunter" (2006).
"The Insatiable" spills just enough blood to be considered a serious vampire movie, but it doesn't go overboard with the blood-letting like some vampire movies do. Further more, it keeps the blood-letting scenes neatly tied in with the films series of events so that it looks more like an expected occurance, rather than a forced splatterfest. Harry's co-workers, played by Huertas, and Hopkins are comical in their on screen moments, comical yet not annoying or easy to hate. Even the mean-spirited Javier, played by Huertas, despite being an asshole, comes off as a somewhat entertaining character...particularly in the films final 20 minutes.
"The Insatiable" ends on a good note, even though some people may find it a tad too predictable for their tastes and due to how the movie ends, all of what came before it kind of feels like a "beating around the bush" sort of deal. But overall, the film is not a total disappointment and intead ends up being a nice little indie vampire movie that's worth seeing atleast once.
Positives:Good performances by Flannery, and Ayanna. A semi-original plot.
Negatives:A few scenes where Tatiana rips off a door or two are very poorly doen and almost look cartoonish.
Overall:Worth a rental.
