TRUE BLOOD Episode 6:"Cold Ground" - Review

In episode 6 of HBO's "True Blood", things pick up from the tragic and shocking conclusion of episode 5...in which Sookie arrived home to find her grandmother dead in the kitchen. Now the question is, who did her in and why? With this being yet another murder to happen in the small town, the police are baffled but at the same time anxious. But they do have suspects, two of the main ones being Bill the vampire and Sookie's brother Jason. But as the episode unfolds, we begin to find out that the overwhelming majority of the town suspects Bill of the murder. Even though the body of Sookie's grandmother wasn't drained of any blood...which is the method of killing for a vampire.

The town sheriff and his deputy still think Bill was somehow responsible though, taking the title of "keystone" cops just a little bit further. Meanwhile Sookie is in mourning and shock over what has transpired, and Bill and Sam both try and be there for her. Each one trying to mark their territory as the shoulder for Sookie to cry on. This leads to some subtle yet not too heavy conflict between the two of them. But eventually Sam wins out in the end momentarily...and just until Sookie feels that she needs to be away from everyone, including Sam...while she processes what's just happened.

The most intriguing occurances in the episode happen at the funeral, where a member of Sookie's family who's been on the outs for awhile within her klan, shows up at the funeral. Meanwhile Sookie begins to get fed up with the townspeoples attitudes towards the death of her grandmother upon reading their thoughts at the funeral, thoughts which range from perverse, to angering, to insulting. Tara, Sookie's best friend ends up tangled in her own funeral-related drama when her mom makes an appearance there, and dumps a startling revelation upon her daughter who upon last seeing her mother, was popped in the head with a liquor bottle by her. Tara laughs the revelation off though, a reaction which most people would have to what her mom reveals to her...which I won't give away here.

Jason has it easy in this episode for the most part. He's only in a few scenes and mostly just spends his time either getting laid in strange ways or suffering from the effects of the second (yet smaller) dose of "V" Lafayette gave him back in ep. 5. Jason however is still suspected in his grandmothers demise, but the police don't press too hard on him in the episode regarding the murder. This is mostly because between the towns two top cops, there's a conflict which stems from one thinking Jason did it and the other believing otherwise. This is also the same case in the situation of whether or not they're gonna finger vampire Bill as the killer. Bill meanwhile after leaving Sookie the first time, has a dream about a mystery man strangling her to death.

We're never shown who the mystery man might be, but when you couple episode 5 with episode 6, you can get a clear picture of who Sookie's attacker might be, and unless there's some major...MAJOR twist to come about in future episodes, things are lining up as if this particular person who's close to Sookie will eventually be fingered as the killer of Sookie's grandmother, a few others, and possibly Sookie as well. Episode 6, "Cold Ground" ends on a very intriguing note...and it sets up Episode seven to answer even more questions.

I'd give "Cold Ground" a viewer rating of 7.8 out of 10 due to it's high level of drama and tension amongst the characters. The entire episode spends it's time showing how each character is coping with the recent tragedy, and the repercussions of it. While they could've done a rush story thing where the funeral happens and then things are skipped ahead to three or four weeks later, I liked the fact that they showed the downer side of things and it really gave the show some much needed drama and buildup which it sort of needed to combat the morbid and sometimes gross and ineffective sexual-related humor it's been displaying for the past two episodes.
