TRUE BLOOD Season 3: "Everything Is Broken" - Review

We're counting down to the final three episodes of season 3 of HBO's "True Blood". Now that episode 8, "Everything Is Broken", is in the books...we move forward to episode 9 next week. Hard to believe the season is already almost done with eh? Seems like June 14th was only yesterday. Anyways, "Everything Is Broken", should go down as the episode that ties up all of the loose ends, so things can go forward much more smoothly. Some thought-to-be-dead characters make their return in this newest episode, only to be permanently "smoked", later on. And basically these characters are cleaned out to make room for events to come. No Alcide in this episode though, meaning no Debbie Pelt in this ep either.

I guess the wolves are being kept on the backburner for awhile until maybe the final episode of season 3? Or maybe they'll return in season 4? Not sure, but there really isn't much for them to do as of now for two reasons. One, Russell's "syndicate" so to speak, has been broken up, with Lorena dead, Franklin dead, and Talbot now dead as well, thanks to Eric. Then there was the battle a few episodes ago, where the wolves came for Sookie, and were pretty much "owned" by her, Jessica, and Bill. So maybe they're just away licking their wounds for the final battle. But it's harder this season to figure out how the season will conclude, than it was last season. Last season, we knew forces were gathering to take down MaryAnn the Maenad.

So season 2 would conclude with that battle either being won or lost. But things are much harder to peg this season, with so many more moving pieces, and more than a few villains left to be staked, or what have you. "Everything Is Broken" doesn't give us the BIG answer to the BIG question we were hoping for though. Which was to find out Sookie's secret, about what she is. Bill takes a little "trip" into Sookie's "world", where she once visited. That's where he gets his answer about what she is. Unfortunately for us viewers though, looks like we'll have to wait until next week before we get the answer.

But...it does give us something to salivate over until next Sunday, and as for me, quell my football jones for awhile. Eric meanwhile finds himself in some trouble with the Vampire Authority over his previous "dealings". We now know that Eric is out for revenge against Russell Edgington for killing his family a long time ago. And in this ep, Eric and Pam have quite a few interesting conversations as they await the ruling on their fates from the Vampire Authority, who put both on lockdown while they decide Eric's fate, and whether or not to allow him to deal with Russell. This coming after Eric alerts them to Russell's "true" plans for the vampire race, and their future relations to humans.

The interesting thing about "Everything Is Broken" though is the revisiting of the Jessica/Hoyt relationship. Especially this late in the season. It seems the two might be back on track, but...I still think waiting until season 4 to bring these two back together would've been a good idea. Not that I have anything against these two characters in particular, but there's a lot going on this season. And probably too much now, near the end, to re-open another "lovers" case this late in the game. But oh well, their decision not mine. Tara meanwhile goes through a series of emotions in this episode. She's actually happy for once at the start of things, but pretty soon, she's visited by an old friend later on. This dims her mood tremendously, but, in typical Tara fashion, she doesn't allow this person to bully her. Thus...the result is her being saved by an unexpected ally. And the rescue throws a strange cog into an already complicated mechanism between her and this particular person. Season 4 will probably open this particular story arc up, and once the secrets are revealed, it'll be interesting to see where things go from there. Jason is still chasing Crystal meanwhile, and this storyline, along with the Sam/Tommy storyline is starting to bug me. Like...really. My dream would be to see Crystal and Tommy both killed off in season 3. Tommy is annoying for many reasons, and Crystal is nothing but trouble, and needs to GO.

Both characters have no depth anyways, and it doesn't seem to be a more-than-meets-the-eye scenario with either, so why not dump em' already? As for Lafayette, he finally gets his mom escorted back to the home by Jesus, who despite rumors, doesn't seem to be anything beyond a possible love interest for Lafayette. As for Holly, well...that remains to be seen. Arlene's baby comes up in an interesting conversation with Holly, who offers Arlene some sort of strange way to get rid of the baby. A non-abortion way. The convo is strange, and doesn't really reveal too much, but, the jury is still out on Holly. I'll just say that. The ending of "Everything Is Broken" is classic though. Great stuff, and one of the best "True Blood" episode endings ever. It also sets up the final three episodes of season 3 to come to an explosive conclusion. Between the mystery elements, and the way all of the major players have been set up now, season 3 is definitely gonna conclude with a bang.
