TRUE BLOOD Season 3: "Evil Is Going On" - Review

So season three of "True Blood" comes to an end with, "Evil Is Going On", the third season's final episode. Stacking it up with how season's 1 and 2 ended, I'd say season 3's finale had a chance to be a major fixture in the series history, but it failed. It fell short. Not by much, but it does indeed fall short. Truth is, the season finale didn't really include much action or suspense. Especially considering how the last episode set things up so perfectly for the final episode of season 3. Russell Edgington and Eric near death, Jason hurrying off to save Crystal's "people", with the possibility of him dying as well. Yep, it was all set up so perfectly. Ripe for one of the best cliff-hanger's of the shows history.

Instead, the final episode of season 3 teases a lot of character deaths, demises, etc...but doesn't deliver on ANY of them. I repeat...ANY of them. Many lives, vampires and human...hung in the balance at the end of the previous episode. And that spills over into "Evil Is Going On" as well. But the writers seemed hell bent on keeping everyone alive, going into season 4. Not sure why though, as this show is beginning to become overloaded with characters as it is. Atleast three people needed to be taken out to make room for the expanding storylines in season 4 of Holly, Alcide, and others. Instead, when the dust settled, no one had bit...it.

The final episode does have some pivotal moments though. Sam confronts Tommy about the stolen money, Bill and Eric save Russell, only to then figure out a new way of getting rid of him for good. This then leads to an act of betrayal that might/would've/could've spelled the end for one of the series main characters. And also would've built a much stronger, and darker mystique around another. Said betrayal then leads to the possibility of another series regular being "iced". But all of this instead leads to absolutely NOTHING. Nothing but empty promises and teases. How interesting the finale of season 3 would've been if they had atleast let us believe that two characters in particular had been killed off.

It would've made the nine month wait for season 4 all the more painful. But instead, the finale deliver a cramped story with too many lame escapes and quick-hitters. But atleast Alcid returns in the final episode. All be it for a brief stint, but it does set up a possible affair with Sookie in season 4. So what secrets does "Evil Is Going On" reveal? None really. Other than Jesus, the orderly from the hospital that Lafayette is apparently in love with, being more than he appears to be. But then again, the "V" trip the two of them took a few episodes ago told us that. And Lafayette, despite not knowing it yet, is exactly what Jesus revealed he is.
So, not much of a surprise there. If you were expecting any werewolf action in the finale, well, sorry to disappoint you. We got no wolves in the finale, and I'm thinking outside of Alcide, we'll probably never see them again. Debbie Pelt was the only surviving wolf anyways during that big fight a few episodes ago. And unless there's some storyline in season 4 where she returns with reinforcements, we probably won't see her character again ever. Hoyt and Jessica's end until season 4 holds little to no drama. There was a moment there I thought it might would, but it was just another tease. And it looks like we'll have to wait until season 4 to see where it all ends up. Bill goes on a crusade in the finale, which you guessed it, revolves around protecting Sookie. Although s the episode ends, we see that Bill might've bitten off more than he can chew, no pun intended.

Bad news meanwhile for people who are not a fan of the Crystal character, as it seems she'll be around for season 4. Jason now has to rescue her from one of the Hot Shot hillbillies who drove off with her in the season finale. I am really not a fan of this storyline between Jason and her. Mostly because I cannot seem to decide which character is more annoying, her or Jason. As for Sookie and Tara, well...the finale leaves two big question marks around both of the series female leads. Sookie and Tara both go AWOL in the finale, but in different ways.

I can't say which one will return in season 4 first, to Bon Temps, but their disappearances should make season 4 all the more interesting. As it will affect a lot of the series regular characters. Tara's disappearance was a bit strange though, as she seemed to be spaced out a bit as she left Bon Temps. Not sure where the whole Tara thing is going, but I hope it's a journey of self-discovery, and not a tragic tale of small-town girl goes to big city, and ends up with drugs, pimps, and the like. As for Sookie, well...her vanishing would've been more exciting if we hadn't already known what she really is. I'd rate season 3 by giving it three stars as a whole, but the finale just gets two stars. It really pales in comparison to last season's finish.
