TRUE BLOOD Season 2 Episode 11: "Frenzy" - Review
"Frenzy", is the 11th episode of "True Blood" season 2. We have one more episode to go before season two ends! Can you believe it's almost over already? This episode is quite possibly the darkest episode of the season. There really are no sunshine and lollipop moments in "Frenzy". Oddly enough, the episodes funnier and more black-humor-esque moments come from Evan Rachel Wood's character, the Vampire Queen. As you remember, Bill came to her for information at the end of the last episode on how to kill Maryann, a Maenad who has taken over the entire town. But she doesn't make his line of questioning easy. Bill not getting the information he needs quick enough doesn't bode well for Sookie and the others. As we'll soon learn.

In fact, everyone is pretty much looking for a way to stop Maryann. Jason and Andy Belefleur go to the police station to arm up. Sam meanwhile gets stuck with Arlene's kids after they show up, and even with them in tow, he still takes a risk by visiting Eric's club to ask for his assistance in stopping Maryann. Speaking of Eric, Eric has a very "Heroes"-esque moment in this episode. And actually, it kind of ruins what was a really scary in some ways, episode. |
Eric does something that just really didn't sit well with me, and I have to ask what were the writers thinking with this one? Giving Eric this moment was just weird and really out of the blue. At any rate, Eric agrees to help, and considering Bill is already at the vampire queens residence, and Eric heads over to see her about stopping Maryann, you know a confrontation between the two is almost assured.
Eric of course doesn't really care what happens to the humans in Bon Temps, and has his own selfish reasons for helping rid the town of Maryann. And if you guessed those reason involve Sookie, well then you're right! Tara meanwhile has managed to piss me off as much as Jason did early on in season two. She makes a dumb move in this episode, which is aided and abetted by Lettie Mae, who is equally nutty. Thus this lands Tara right back into the clutches of Maryann. So much for all that work Sookie and Bill did to free her in the first place.
Again, I thought this was a bad decision by the writers to makes Tara's decision making so poor. Even if she is madly in love with Eggs, I couldn't see Tara as a character thrusting herself into danger like that. But this is apparently the new Tara. Who's not as smart as the old Tara who we saw back in season 1. But the interesting thing about Tara in this episode is her connection to Maryann. It would seem that her connection to Maryann is a lot deeper and buried in the past than we ever knew.
It also ties into the death of Ms. Janette which occured at the end of season one, but we were only alerted to at the start of season two. Now here, I applaud the writers for throwing in this intriguing and interesting twist. It's also a great backstory for Maryann and kind of brings up in it's own way, the question of what she is and where she came from. We had the "what she is" question 85% answered by now, but rather than having her just waltz into town, tieing her in with Tara's "session" with Ms. Janette was a smart plot point to add in this late in the season.

Sookie meanwhile doesn't get going until late in the episode, when she decides to go back to her house, which is now Maryann's lair, to retrieve Tara...again. Again as in someone ahs to retrieve Tara, again. Jessica and Hoyt's relationship meanwhile takes a turn for the worse. Last we left them, Jessica was sinking ehr fangs into Hoyt's mother. Hoyt doesn't take to this really well, as you would imagine, and after prying Jessica from his moms person, he splits with his mom in tow. Is this the end of these two? Who knows. But I am kind of slightly drifting away from my earlier prediction that Jessica would end up killing Hoyt. Right now, I see a 50%-40% chance that will happen. Especially considering we only have one episode left to go in season 2.

But Hoyt's mother was starting to become very annoying, and I kind of as a viewer, wanted Jessica to take her out. At first, she was a comical and interesting obstacle to their relationship. But now, I've kind of soured on her. Sookie's attempt to save Tara is probably one of the episodes more suspenseful collection of scenes. But there are a series of twists that lead to a very dark and hopeless resolution for Sookie's rescue attempt of Tara from Maryann. And a major surprise comes at the end which ties into the name of one of this seasons main characters. Not gonna spoil it though, but it's a twist you won't see coming. Too bad we have to wait two whole weeks until the series returns with it's season 2 finale..."sigh."
