TRUE BLOOD Season 3: "Hitting The Ground" - Review

"True Blood"s latest salvo, "Hitting The Ground", makes for this season's most impactful episode so far. It sets in motion a whole new direction for this season, and sets up some interesting what ifs? And possibilities as the season goes on and heads towards it's conclusion. When last we left things, Sookie seemed to be in dire straits as Lorena had sank her fangs into her. Bill however managed to gather up enough strength to save Sookie from Lorena, and in the end, Sookie managed to escape her enemy. Only later on, to find another enemy/threat in someone who was supposed to be close to her. Now, this puts the episode into heavy drama mode, which doesn't last long, but makes for interesting television nonetheless. |
Granted, no one really expects Sookie to die in this series. And even if she did, certainly not this early in only it's third season. But the writers feel it necessary anyways to dangle that carrot in front of the viewer, so they can have that obligatory episode that tugs at ones heartstrings for a short period of time. But Sookie's "condition", once she's nearly killed by this person who was supposed to be closest to her, has some very interesting side effects. For starters, as she's in her coma, brought on by the attack, she has an interesting meet-up with some "interesting", people...if you wanna call them that.
The whole segment puts forth more questions than it answers, and apparently, we might have gotten a glimpse into what Sookie is, with her freaky powers and all. As two things happen in this particular episode. 1, Sookie has a mental-vacation which leads to her meeting these "people" in this, magical garden of eden-like place. And two, Bill's contact with Sookie's blood ends up taking away one of his main weaknesses as a vampire. And the trifecta of the whole "What is Sookie Stackhouse?" storyline, comes when Eric manages to find out what Sookie is after draining The Queen's minion Hadley.
Speaking of vampire royalty, this episode marks the demise of one of the shows major vampire elders. And it'll be interesting to see what repercussions come about due to this particular occurance. My guess is, if anything should come of it, it probably won't be until season 4. I can't see a whole new storyline of vampire politics being kicked off this late in season 3. We're halfway through the season already, so starting a whole new storyline, which in itself would take a whole season to do justice, just doesn't make sense to me. Then again, you never know with this show. But seeing as how the vampire-hating Churchies from back in season 2, are supposed to show up at some point this season, I doubt they have time to do anymore expanding of the story.

Elsewhere in "Hitting The Ground", Sam is still trying to get a grip on his folks, and finally manages to pry Tommy away from them when he catches onto the dog-fighting stuff. I still think this whole storyline, while it carries a certain element of realism, is not the strongest of season 3's storylines. But I hope Sam and Tommy stay in the picture for the foreseeable future, and Tommy's parents are out of the picture for good. They've worn out their welcome at this point. Meanwhile, as Sookie, Bill, Alcide, and Tara make their escape from Russell's estate, while Bill and Lorena's relationship comes to a bloody end, it seems things are only beginning to heat up between Alcide and Debbie Pelt, as Debbie delivers a stern warning to him as he escapes with the others.
|
The whole Debbie Pelt thing is weird to me because Alcide seems to good for her, the woman is white trash, and being a werewolf, he should just take her out and save himself any further drama. I hope he wastes her before season 3 ends, because Pelt is not only an annoying character, but also a very loud one. Eric on the other hand, well, things seem to be going good for him. As he has forged a seeming new alliance with Russell and The Queen, and has freed himself from being under the thumb of a certain vampire elder. And even manages to rescue Pam in the process. But I think Eric by the time season 3 ends, will be truly tested, and it'll be cool to see that since he seems to always be the cushier of the two when it comes to him and Bill.
It'll be nice for once to see Eric not have it so easy. But as for Sookie and Bill, things get darker for them in the coming weeks it seems. And the cliffhanger this season might possibly be Sookie having to kill Bill, a total 180 from last seasons cliffhanger which was her possibly marrying him, and him being vampire-napped. But a few questions are gonna remain, such as why has Bill gone bad? And will Sookie have the courage to kill Bill if she has to? I think of all of season 3's big questions that are left to be answered, that one is the biggest.
