TRUE BLOOD Season 2 Episode 9: "I Will Rise Up" - Review

So "I Will Rise Up", is episode one, of the FINAL FOUR. Meaning the final four episodes of season 2. Yes, I know it's hard to believe, but season 2 is just three episodes away from concluding until next summer, when season three kicks off. Time flies when you're having fun, it's true what they say. "I Will Rise Up" documents the aftermath of Luke's suicide bomber deployment which came at the end of episode 8, "Timebomb". The usual people survived the explosion though, so there's no big surprises when Bill returns to the wreckage to search for Sookie. Sookie survives, Eric survives, and Godrick survives.
Although an interesting twist involving Godrick comes much later on in the episode. The bad news about the explosion however, is that it gives Sookie some significant injuries, despite Eric throwing himself over her to cover her up from ending up as a fatality. So in turn, Eric manages to convince Sookie to drink from him, ala Lafayette a few episodes ago. Er go, the situation plays right into Eric's hands, much to Bill's dismay. Eric is certainly being set up to be the villain in season 3 I believe. He is not being outright wicked, and evil...but he is gradually making very sly and slick movements toward supervillain status.

While he's not as outright evil and threatening as some of the shows other villains this season, he is still villainous in his own way none the less. Eric's moment of triumph is cut short however, after some big wig vamps show up, and are not pleased with Luke being able to get one up on the vampires with the suicide bomber mission. They are displeased with Godrick's leadership, so much in fact that they demand he rescind his Sheriff status over Texas. Eric is livid about the decision, but Godrick, once again being passive and pacifistic, agrees to rescind his Sheriff status.

Much to Eric's dismay. Godrick then takes it a step further in making an admission about how the "Light" church apparently "apprehended" him. This leads to Godric making a big decision which affects the other vampires, and mostly Eric, in a huge way. This leads to us saying goodbye to the Godrick character for good. Which is too bad because the character was a very intriguing one, even despite his non-violent attitude towards humans, even those who are out to kill his kind.

But on some level, you understand why Godrick makes the decision that he does, and you kind of feel for him in a few ways. Sookie meanwhile is immediately affected by having Eric's blood now within her consciousness, and I am not sure where this storyline will go or lead to with three episodes left in the season, and the whole Maryann situation still needing to be resolved, but it will be interesting to see if they wrap it up quickly before season two ends, or if they draw it out into season 3.

Whatever the decision may be, Sookie's..."interesting" dream, brought about by Eric's blood, is only a taste of the weirdness this turn of events will bring about. Sam meanwhile is still locked up in Bon Temps and Jessica and Hoyt's relationship takes a pretty comical turn for the worse, and the better. Sam's stay in jail is interrupted when Maryann shows up to release him. Sam however, manages to slip away from Maryann using his shapeshifter abilities. Maryann arrives at his cell to discover him gone, and gets angry. But on her way out, she releases her "nympho-zombies" from their cells. Tara meanwhile has to keep Eggs and Lafayette from getting into a full-scale brawl after Tara shows up with a bruised face, thanks to her and Eggs feasting on Maryann's "recipe", and going zombie again. They once again wake up with no recollection of what happened the night before. Maryann though, with some convincing, manages to talk them both into accepting their blackouts as a higher state of consciousness.

Lafayette however shows up with Lettie Mae to get Tara and take her back with them to safety. This results in a huge confrontation where Tara attacks her mother, Lafayette and Eggs go at it, and Lafayette getting a read of what Maryann really is. Sam watches the confrontation happen from a "small" perspective, but Lafeyette and Lettie Mae manage to get Tara out of the house and escape with her in tow. Maryann doesn't take the situation lying down though, and turns her attention back to Sam. She shows up at Merlotte's and starts to open up the skies as she demands to know where Sam is. Turning everyone in the place into a Nympho-zombie in the process. Sam meanwhile manages to find Andy in a nearby hotel, and it looks like the two are gonna try and cook up a plan to stop Maryann. Hoyt meanwhile informs his mother of his relationship with Jessica, and confronts her about her hateful ways.

Thus he insists the three of them have dinner together. Which turns out to be a big mistake when Hoyt's mother tears into Jessica about her being a vampire, and what she can and cannot do for her son. The fangs come out, but when Hoyt's mother hits a sensitive nerve with one of her verbal daggers, Jessica retracts, and goes to flee Merlotte's. Hoyt follows her out however, this cutting all ties with his mother...for now atleast. Sookie and Godrick have the episodes best moment though, as they have a long discussion on the roof of the house before Godrick goes on his permanent vacation. So in episode 9, Jason, Sookie, and Bill return home to Bon Temps. They find the town however has spun out of control, thanks to Maryann. Looks like shutting her down will be up to Bill, but considering what Bill tells Sookie in the previews for ep. 10, it might be easier said than done.
