TRUE BLOOD Season 2 Episode 2: "Keep This Party Going" - Review

Picking up where episode 1 of the second season left off, episode 2, "Keep This Party Going" begins to bring things more into focus involving the survivors of season 1, but at the same time, still leaves many questions unanswered. So in the first episode of season 2, Tara and her new "guy", Eggs, continue to grow closer, but in episode two, while hanging out at Maryann's mansion (or we could call it a compound at this point considering she seems to have freaky mind powers over people like a cult leader), Tara learns more about him. Including a pretty sordid past which involves everything from drug dealing to armed robbery. This does expound upon the character, but also begs the question...why does Maryann seem to have a thing for taking in previously "troubled" people?

And what about that Maryann? What exactly is she? At this point I've heard all manner of guesses from she's an inter-dimensional diety of some sort (ala Glory from Buffy), to she's an evil buddhist type, to the ordinary explanation of she's a swamp witch. Whatever she is, I'm sure we'll find out this season. I can't see the writers holding off and dangling that carrot all the way up until season 3. But I hope to god she isn't a swamp witch. God that would be super lame as hell. I honestly think she's a diety of some sort. Probably not from this world. But for those wondering if we learn anything new about Maryann in episode two, well...we learn she loves to eat. I mean the girl can really eat!
And we also learn that she apparently has the power to invoke lust within those around her, and that she can turn Sam into a dog using her freaky reality-tremble-thingamajig whatever you call it abilities. But the most interesting Maryann-related incident in episode two comes when Sookie meets her for the first time, and is able to read her thoughts. Nothing incriminating or super scary comes through, but some chanting does come through. I'm no latin expert, but considering every show that uses witchcraft in it's storyline has gone "latin" with the text, I assume the words she spoke were latin.
But I'll be damned if I knew what any of them meant. Speaking of Sookie, her and Bill don't get super romantic in episode two like they did in ep 1. Which makes sense considering we've established that they are indeed a couple, and don't hate each other back in "Nothing But The Blood" (ep 1). So no need to rehash. Sookie does play a vital role in episode two though, asking Tara to move in with her. Something Maryann learns about, and it will be interesting to see how she reacts to the news in episode 3. Whether she makes a play for Tara to stay, or simply lets her leave. If Tara decides to leave, considering Maryann's trappings of a huge mansion, and food and relaxation all day seem to be clouding her judgement for the time being.

Lafayette meanwhile is still stuck being Eric's prisoner down in the dungeon. Only this time the vampires finally begin questioning him about a few things, most notably his selling of "V" blood. Which is where we learn that a very powerful vampire named Gadrick (sp?), has gone missing in Texas. And Eric believes Lafayette may hold the key to what happened to him. However Lafayette informs him that he doesn't know what happened to the Texas vamp, and also dimes out Jason Stackhouse as the one who nabbed his "V" supplier back in season one. |
Things take an interesting turn for Lafayette in episode two, as he goes from being possibly let go, to being imprisoned again, to escaping, to getting shot, and then finally...a MAJOR twist which leaves us hanging as to whether he is still with us or not. Not sure if episode three will reveal Lafayette's fate considering the previews showed nothing of him, so it's all up in the air for now. Eric however makes a request to Bill about Sookie, which angers Bill, and brings about an ominous threat from Eric. I wouldn't read too much into it though, considering the spoilers I've read regarding season two will quell this incident pretty quickly when Bill ends up accompanying Sookie to where Eric wants them to go. Unless the writers changed things that is. Jason meanwhile manages to come off as even more annoying in episode two than he was in episode one.
His descent into the church gets stranger and deeper, but alas, we do see signs that Jason might be having second thoughts about joining the vampire hating group. Which is made even more apparent during a retreat where Jason ends up gaining an unwanted rival, who is dead set on proving himself to the pastor and his wife that he should be the churches A student. And during all of this, we kind of get a small glimpse of a developing subplot involving Jason and the pastors wife which might or might not grow into something more later on down the road.
Bill meanwhile runs into some new problems with Jessica after his run in with Eric. Problems created by Sookie when Jessica manages to convince her to take her to see her family one last time. This quickly goes south when Jessica leaves the car (which she promised not to do), and decides to reunite with her mother and little sister. Sookie follows, and the whole ordeal leads to a warm reunion between Jessica and her family. Which quickly goes sour when Jessica's abusive father returns, and scorns her for disappearing. Unaware she's now a vampire, something he and the rest of the family find out eventually when he pisses Jessica off after threatening her with violence. Bill eventually has to rush in to difuse the situation, but in episode three...it's doubtful he'll be as forgiving towards Sookie for taking Jessica out. Will be intriguing to see the repercussions of this screw up. With all that transpired in episode two, episode three "Scratches" should be pretty interesting.
