TRUE BLOOD Season 2 Episode 5: "Never Let Me Go" - Review

In episode five, "Never Let Me God"...things get a lot more interesting, and crowded. In fact, I think this episode has introduced more new characters into the series than any other episode so far this season. Picking up where episode 4 left off, Sookie chases down her "kindred spirit", a guy who can read minds just like she can. But this guy is so on edge and worried about the vampires finding out his secret, that he tries to avoid Sookie at every turn. This episode also makes sure to lay in on thick with the vampire differentials between states. Whereas we were led to believe the vampires in Louisiana were pretty fearsome, this episode has a lot of mentions of just how scary Texas vampires are. In fact, it's one of the things that sends Sookie's new friend into hiding later on in the episode.

Now I'm not sure if we'll see him again anytime soon or not. My guess is not, but my hope is that we will see him again sometime soon. It would be an intriguing wrinkle for the whole Sookie and Bill relationship if Sookie was torn between Bill, and someone who could read minds like she can. But this character was so on edge that who knows, he might turn up dead in a future episode via suicide. Then again, this is "True Blood" we're talking about so you never know where new characters might pop up. But it was interesting how in this episode two main characters meet someone who's like them.

While with Sookie, it's the vampire-hotel bellhop, back in Bon Temps, for Sam, it's the new waitress Daphne, who if you remember in the last episode, told Sam ominously..."I Know What You Are". This occuring at the Maryann Birthday Bash for Tara. But in episode 5, we learn exactly what she meant by that, and it seems that now Sam has found himself a new friend, who has "a lot" more in common with him that anyone else he's been with so far. This might finally be a turning point for the Sam character, who has been relegated to some strange and disfunctional relationships throughout season one.

But at the same time, you've gotta wonder where this relationship will go between Sam and Daphne when she still cannot perform her duties correctly at Sam's place. E.G. breaking dishes, dropping food, etc. It'll be interesting to see if at some point Sam cans her due to pressure from his other workers, and if that makes a negative impact on their relationship. Lafayette meanwhile returns to work at Sam's place. But not as his usual flamboyant self. In fact, the new Lafayette seems like a very broken person. But it seems that Eric's infusion of blood has healed him, with no "vampirey" side-effects. Atleast not as of yet it seems.

Sam gives Lafayette his job back which is good for him, but as things get better for Lafayette, things get bad for Tara. Tara pretty much sends Maryann packing, after learning that she is still in Sookie's house the morning after the party. She then has it out with Eggs (sort of) over her ousting of Maryann. She then questions him about his and Maryann's relationship. But never gets a straight answer from Eggs who basically gives an answer which falls along the lines of..."she helped him through some rough times in the past." It remains to be seen if this is true or not, but so far, Eggs seems like the least devious character this season. So for now, I think he's being straight with Tara.

But in typical Maryann fashion, she has one last card to play. Which in the end, results in Tara changing her mind about forcing Maryann to leave. Which sets up a scenario where Maryann is going to be living with Tara under Sookie's roof. I wonder how Sookie will deal with that upon her return from Texas, as last time Sookie and Maryann met, it wasn't exactly a friendly encounter. But more of a weird, scary, creepy one. Speaking of Texas, Eric meets with two Texas vampires, which is where Ed Quinn's cameo finally shows up this season. The three, along with Bill, discuss who might've snatched Godrick. Some still suspect the Sun Church, but others think someone else might've played a hand in the vampire-napping.

This leads to an angry exchange of words between Eric and the two Texas vampires, and Sookie being caught in the middle of it all. But some interesting information does leak out during the exchange. We learn that there are vampires as tempermental as Eric (Quinn's character), but also vampires not as tempermental (Quinn's characters female companion). Bill during all of this, manages to pull Eric aside and grill him on his concern for Godrick, upon which Eric reveals a major secret to Bill. All of this results in Sookie coming up with a master plan to find out who took Godrick and why.

A plan which Bill disapproves of but Eric likes a lot. Jessica meanwhile continues to be a thorn in Bill's side, and Bill finds himself trying to juggle Sookie's romantic advances, while trying to keep her out of harms way, and at the same time -- attempting to discipline Jessica. Jason meanwhile continues to impress his superiors at the Sun Church retreat. He has some big moments during an obstacle course which he and the other recruits are put through, which leads to him currying even more favor with the good reverend. But it seems my prediction is coming more to fruition, as a rift develops between the reverend and his wife, and of course who does she turn to because of this? Why Jason of course. The two have quite an "interesting" encounter in one scene where Jason's soaking in a bathtub post-obstacle course.

And like I keep saying -- before season two ends, these two will have gotten it on. But with Sookie on her way to infiltrating the church, things could be put on hold for awhile. But trust me, eventually before the conclusion of season two, Jason and the rev's wife will have their "moment". The biggest surprise of the episode however comes at the end when a new player steps into the second season, and it seems she has her eyes, and fangs...fixed on Bill. The preview for episode 6 is a juicy one, and it is beginning to look like Eric might be divising some master plan for many people and this new vampire woman seems to be a big part of it. The big question is though, what is Eric's plan, and who will be the losers and winners in it?
