"True Blood" episode 10, "New World In My View" is aptly titled. It symbolizes the full move of events from Texas, back to Bon Temps. And when Sookie, Jason, and Bill arrive back, it truly is a "New World" in their view. As any good "True Blood" watcher knows, while Sookie, Bill, and Jason were involved in the whole Texas Triangle mess with Godrick, the Sun Church, and Bill's long-ago love making an unexpected visit, Maryann was quickly increasing her grip over the town of Bon Temps with her freaky Maynack powers. Turning everyone into sex-crazed, party-crazed, black-eyed zombies. The "new" Bon Temps lands right on Sookie and Jason's doorstep when they arrive back in town, and nearly kill one of Maryann's minions in a car accident. |
Once Bill is awoken from his en-route slumber, the three must quickly figure out what's going on, and how to stop it. Not as easy task considering the entire town has come under Maryann's influence, and the only people who know what's going on are Sam and Andy, and after a badly-played strategic hand by Sam, the two end up trapped inside the freezer at Merlotte's. But we do get an intriguing bit of info about Maryann. It seems her plan is to sacrifice Sam to her god. Meaning Maryann, as powerful as she is, is driven by a higher power. This is evident as at the beginning of the episode, we see Maryann and Eggs constructing a twisted, rotting idol of sorts, in preparation for the sacrifice.
Not sure if we will ever get to see this "god" Maryann worships. With only two episodes left in the second season, and Sookie's cousin yet to be introduced, I am not sure if there'll be adequate time to introduce any new villains. Then again, this Maryann thing could carry over into the series' third season. You never really know. Tara meanwhile is being held prisoner for her own good at Lafayette's place by him and her mother Lettie Mae. Sookie learns this via a call from Lafayette when she arrives at her place only to find that it's no longer her place. And that Maryann has taken it over. This scene is pretty cool considering the backdrop for it, as Sookie's place has been turned into a twisted, gothic-looking chapel of sorts. Complete with candles and all.
It's also where we finally get to see Bill and Maryann have a confrontation for the first time ever. Not gonna give away who wins or who loses, but the results of the confrontation are very shocking, and actually Sookie plays a bigger role in what occurs during these moments than Bill or anyone else does. The confrontation does leave Bill in a pretty gross predicament afterwards though. And although the battle isn't a long one, it's certainly one of the many highlights of the second season.

But I would say this episode is when I finally started to like Jason Stackhouse again. I've been pretty down on his character throughout the whole Sun Church fiasco, but his actions in "New World In My View" have given me a new respect for Jason. He for the most part redeems himself in my eyes despite his past actions. Not only the Sun Church thing, but also the whole Amy fiasco. I felt if he had been smarter about it, the whole thing with Amy could've ended a lot better than it did. Sam steals the show in this episode though, as he has to get really creative to avoid Maryann's minions, and keep himself from becoming a sacrifical lamb so to speak. |
And he get some help from Andy Belefleur, another character who is kind of growing on me these days. He started out as a total prick, but I have to admit, I kind of like the guy now here in season 2. He's been fired from his job, and has risked being labeled a wacko for the rest of his life, all in an attempt to save Bon Temps from Maryann. The guys got guts, I'll give him that. I was not as sour on Jason as I was Andy back in season one, but now I think I like both characters a ton more than I did at the start of season 2. Jessica and Hoyt's relationship continues to be a rocky road, even as Hoyt's mother has come under the influence of Maryann's juju. It all eventually leads to a "biting" conclusion.
Episode 10's more emotional moments come when Sookie and Bill arrive at Lafayette's place to see Tara, and are faced with the possibility that Tara may never be the same again. She's pretty deep in Maryann's influence by this point, but Sookie and Bill are determined to reach her and bring her out of it, and have to get very creative to do so. This leads to Sookie coming to a crossroads about what to do about and how to stop Maryann. But an intriguing twist from Bill's past manages to give him an idea that might put an end to Maryann once and for all. But in order to do this, Bill has to go and see someone, and this is where we get the lead in to see Evan Rachel Wood's character, the Vampire Queen. Although at the end of ep 10, we only get a glimpse of who we think, is her. So get ready for Episode 11 next Sunday. It's sure to be a can't-miss-show!
