TRUE BLOOD Season 3: "Night On The Sun" - Review

"True Blood", episode 7, "Night On The Sun", sets straight pretty much every character for the forthcoming season finale. The question is though, does it kill the intrigue too early? Just a few episodes ago, we had all thought Bill had gone totally over to the dark side, and Eric, well, we had all thought he had finally gone all in to the dark side. But episode 7 manages to spur any questions or suspicions about who's on who's side and friends and foes. Although I personally had suspicions about Bill and Eric's loyalties, one can never be too sure with a show like "True Blood". In this episode, we get pretty much full on war between all of this seasons three principles, humans, werewolves (or wolves as they're called in this show), and vampires.

This pretty much sets up everyone in their respective corners, as Bill and Sookie at first have a rough start after she wakes up in the hospital, but that soon subsides during a tearful conversation they have in the hospital. A tearful conversation which is then followed by another one later on between Jessica and Bill, her creator. While Sookie forgives Bill pretty quickly, which should've been obvious to any fan of this show, I mean she practically forgives him for everything...Tara and Jason don't. This sets both, two people Sookie loves, on different paths. Tara of course, takes the more mature path, of trying to talk Sookie into dumping Bill for good, before she gets herself killed. Tara however in this episode, is still all the while, trying to deal with her own trauma, related to Franklin kidnapping her earlier.

While Jason threatens to go after Bill himself, and even gets Andy Belefleur involved for awhile. Oddly enough though, Jason's anger at Bill gets sidetracked when Crystal shows back up, sporting a black eye. This sends Jason after the men responsible for hurting her. Funny thing is though, those same men, who we find out in this episode aren't men at all, are looking for Crystal. While Jason is pretty tough when he wants to be, I think this is truly one of those times where he might've bitten off more than he can chew. And it's once again because of his lack of intellect.

Granted, the noble and chivalrous thing to do, is save a woman from an abusive relationship, but the character of Crystal is not a very honorable person, nor is she worth saving in my estimation. I think she will be Jason's ultimate undoing, much like MaryAnne almost was Tara's. While MaryAnn's motives were never made clear to Tara however, Crystal's motives should've been clear to Jason last episode when he showed up at her place, and she pretended to not know who he was. Meanwhile, speaking of love triangles, Lafayette and Jesus meet once again, after Lafayette's mother shows up at his place spouting off gibberish about witches and stuff.

While Lafayette and Jesuses meeting has "interesting" results, I wonder if the dialogue during this whole bit is setting up something for much later on. There's some interesting talk between Lafayette's mom, who's being played by Alfre Woodard, him, and Jesus. Kind of Sookie Stackhouse stuff about Lafayette having power inside him, and some witches or people coming for him because of that power he holds inside. At the same time, this all coincides with Merlotte's getting a new waitress, a blond named Holly. A very strange and distinct looking woman, who I gather will end up becoming or being revealed to be, a supernatural villain at some point this season or next season. Then again, based on the dream Sookie had while she was in the hospital, Holly could have ties to "those women".

But honestly, the actress playing Holly looks too facially-distinct to not be casted as a witch or some sort of sorceress. But then again, I could be wrong. We'll just have to see where this Holly thing goes, but from what I hear, she's gonna be around for awhile. Speaking of Merlotte's, Sam gives Tommy a job there, which goes sour really quickly when his eyes begin to wander towards some of the ladies who work there, and to top it all off, he begins spoiling for fights with the customers, one of which being Hoyt. Hoyt by the way, who is still pining for Jessica, who ahs her own issue in this episode, being trained for combat with wolves by Bill, and finally getting her first real taste of combat when Russell and the wolves show up at Bill's place.

The wolves also show up at Sookie's place, but thanks to a warning from Hadley, Sookie is ready for them, more specifcially, ready for Debbie Pelt, who is on a rampage of revenge after her falling out with Alcide. We don't see much of Alcide in this episode, as early on, he watches over Sookie, but is soon called away to protect friends and loved ones from Debbie and her gang of wolves. Which later proves to have been just a plan to get him away from Sookie so she'd be vulnerable. But the episode concludes with a lot of shocks and surprises, and for once, it was nice to see two of the shows main female characters in particular, show some inner-strength and physical strength when it came to facing-down threats. Episode seven certainly sets up nicely for episode 8 next week.
