TRUE BLOOD Season 2 Episode 7: "Release Me" - Review

So "True Blood"s second season continues to get more intriguing with episode 7, "Release Me". This episode brings one of my predictions in my review of Episode 6 to fruition. I predicted that Tara and Eggs after the "orgy", which concluded episode 6...would not remember a darn thing the next morning. And sure enough, that's exactly what happened. Although there is a sign of life that maybe Tara will have it all come back to her memory sooner or later, when she talks to Arlene about the events of the past night. That being the Maryann-inspired orgy, which is broken up ironically when Detective Andy Bellefleur shows up, and fires a round from his gun, snapping everyone out of their trance. This enables Sam, who seemed doomed in the last episode, to escape.

Maryann however isn't willing to let him go so easily, and she gives chase in what is one of the series weirder moments. Well, weirder when compared to the series past weird and strange moments. But this episode finally gives us answers about what Maryann is. Although not exactly clear ones. But answers none the less. Maryann, and what she is...apparently has connections to ancient mythology and the bible. An interesting blend, and of course she is immortal. A factoid which comes out when Sam has a heated confrontation with Daphne, the new waitress whom we discovered in the last episode, was in with Maryann and her minions.

But we also learn some intriguing things about Daphne, and how people like her and Sam, who are both shapeshifters, end up being in league with someone like Maryann. While Maryann has the ability to inspire lust within people, it seems that she cannot just simply grab control over people like Sam and Daphne. All of this information she spills to Sam comes with a heavy price though. As we will soon learn later in the episode. Meanwhile Detective Andy Bellefleur spills the beans on the whole orgy he walked up on earlier, but of course no one believes him. Thus continuing the downward spiral for the ex cop who can't seem to catch a break this season.

The Fellowship of the sun meanwhile move closer to their "lock in" event, as Sarah informs Jason that she is going to stand by her vows to her husband, but yet at the same time, have her fun with Jason on the side. She doesn't spell it out in those exact words, but more or less says exactly that in her own way. After her and Jason's "intimate moments" in the church. Elsewhere Sookie is still locked away in the church basement with Isabelle's human husband, but he has a big secret of his own. Which ties into the Fellowship Of The Sun church, and Godrick's disappearance. The intriguing thing about the Isabelle character though is how much depth they seem to add onto the character as the season moves forward.

I was thinking that she'd make one or two appearances as just a snappy dresser, and part of the Texas vampire coven. But they've really given the character some depth, and an attitude that ties in with Bill's view of Sookie. A nice counter to the Eric character, who you never can tell which way he's going. Speaking of Eric, he's going to have some "splaining" to do to Bill, considering in this episode, Bill learns from his female maker that Eric was the one who summoned her there. Bill of course wanting to go save Sookie from the Fellowship of the sun, but his maker being stronger than he is, is basically holding him hostage in his hotel room. During this time, we get more flashbacks involving Bill and his maker, including the moment where Bill demands his emancipation from her and her lifestyle, which he detests so much.

Sookie does however manage to get her message to Bill relayed through her old telepath friend, who made an appearance two episodes ago, but Bill isn't the one who goes rushing to Sookie's rescue. Another vamp, does, but that vamp isn't the one who ends up saving Sookie from her attacker at the end of the episode. Which is where we finally see Godrick show up. All of this spurned on when Reverend Newlin and his lackey interviews Sookie and her "companion", and learns that Sookie is Jason's sister.

The Reverend doesn't take this news well at all, and decides that it's time for Jason to be "dealt" with. But of course, Jason manages to escape when the Rev's lackey takes him out into the woods to "do the job". It'll be interesting to see if Jason finds Sookie or just escapes back to Bon Temps without any knowledge of her being on the compound grounds.

Either way, it looks like Jason is officially done with the Fellowship Of The Sun. The new question though is, how his joining the group in the first place, will affect his relationship with Sookie and Bill in the future. As for Lafayette and Jessica, Lafayette is back in business selling "V", and Jessica and Hoyt get closer in their romantic relationship. Although I have a sneaking suspicion that Jessica is gonna end up killing him or turning him before they leave Texas.

So looking at episode 7, there were some interesting turning points and set ups for the next episode. Will Tara finally remember what happened to her and Eggs? Will Sam just tell her? Will Tara find out what ties Eggs has to Daphne's "price"? Will Maryann finally get Sam? Will Sookie be rescued by Godrick, or end up as his next victim?, Will Bill ever escape his maker and return back to Sookie? And of course, what will happen to Jason Stackhouse now that the Fellowship knows he's a traitor? Looks like episode 8, "Timebomb" is gonna be a can't-miss!
