"Scratch My Back" marks the third episode of "True Blood"s second season. A season which in just two episodes, has shocked and amazed already. This is the episode before the series goes on a brief hiatus for the 4th of July weekend. The series will then return with new episodes beginning July 12th. So what have they given us to hold us over until then? Well episode 3 makes things a lot stranger, that's for sure. Episode 2 concluded with Bill having to stop Jessica from attacking her family, specifically her abusive father, and as expected, in episode 3, Sookie gets a stern talking-to from Bill about her decision to take Jessica out for a night-time drive to see her folks.

This marks yet another blow-up in the Bill and Sookie relationship, which takes a turn back to lovers lane after Bill nearly loses Sookie to an animal attack. After Sookie leaves Bill and Jessica in the car to walk home and blow off some steam from Bill scolding her about her foolish decision, she is attacked by a human-creature which has claws and the head of a bull. Bill manages to get there in time to rescue Sookie from further damage at the hands of the mysterious beast, but not fast enough to catch a glimpse of it. Sookie however informs Bill of it's look when she is taken to Eric's place to get worked on.
Seems the creature left a nasty scratch on Sookie's back which infected her bloodstream with a deadly toxin, a deadly and fatal toxin. An old lady, who's a local healer who's not fond of vampires, but agrees to help since Sookie is human, manages to patch her up though. But this doesn't solve the mystery of the creature, as Bill and Eric are baffled at what it is. Despite being vampires of decades old age, neither Eric nor Bill can figure out what the monster is or isn't, but Erics minions are ordered to search the area where Sookie was attacked, and they deduce the creature to have traces of human within it.
Just another mystery to add to the already large pile of mystery's that have made season two so fun to watch so far. Meanwhile Tara is looking more and more like she will move in with Sookie, a decision which will be spurned on by Sam's warnings towards her about Maryann, and a swinger-esque party which Tara attends with Eggs, only to later have Eggs lured away by another woman during the festivities. Seems that Maryann's lifestyle is beginning to wear a bit thin on Tara, even though it's a life of fun, parties, and smoking joints in the morning. But it's looking like Tara wants out, and ASAP. It'll be interesting to see if Maryann lets her leave, or not.
Speaking of Maryann, episode three doesn't focus as much on her as ep 2 did, but we do get a glimpse at some more of her freaky abilities, during the party where people go "black-eyed" again, some start bleeding, and Belefleur is subject to his eyes playing "tricks" on him, all orchestrated by Maryann. I tell ya, when we finally find out what exactly she is, I'll be a happy man. Jason, Sookie's brother is still hanging out with the "light" people, and gets more acquainted with their leaders Sarah and Steve Newlin over dinner. I still think sooner or later, Jason is gonna end up in bed with Sarah, and this will either get him booted from the group, or she will betray her husband, and hold Jason up as their new figurehead. Keep an eye out for either of those two twists, because it seems that's where we are headed.

Although I could be wrong, and Jason may come to his senses and just quit the group altogether, but when has Jason Stackhouse ever shown common sense in this series? Lafayette's ordeal though, finally comes to an end when Sookie, resting up from her attack, and healing quite nicely, runs into the bartender at Eric's establishment. Her mind-reading abilities really come in handy during the confrontation, and Sookie ends up forcing the bartender to take her to where Lafayette is being kept. Eventually, an agreement between Eric, Sookie, and Bill is reached in regards to Lafayette.

He is released, and Sookie agrees to accompany Bill to Texas to find out what happened to that old and powerful vampire Eric mentioned in episode 2, the one which was stolen by someone and hasn't been seen since. Not sure how this is gonna turn out, but I suspect the "light" people had something to do with snatching up this vampire. It would be very surprising to me if they weren't behind it. But a Sookie and Bill roadtrip should be interesting. Meanwhile Jessica is stuck back at home while Bill tends to Sookie, so she of course breaks the rules yet again, and this time she heads off to Sam's place where she meets a guy.
She ends up taking the guy home, with some pretty disasterous results later on based on yet another "Jessica" move, which of course angers Bill. Sam meanwhile is preparing to leave town, but we're never given a reason why. It's either the new waitress who can't do anything right, or it's Maryann, or all of the above. But Sam decides to take one last swim before he splits town. Daphne, the disaster-prone new waitress meets Sam at the lake where he's swimming, and the two enter into some less confrontational dialogue than previously shown in the first three episodes.
Which probably stems from her and him not being at work, and her not breaking or dropping stuff. But the finale of episode 3 throws us for a huge loop when it's revealed that Daphne has a massive scar on her back, a scar similar to the one Sookie received from her attack by the bull creature. What does it all mean? We'll have to wait until episode four to find out! And judging by the previews of episode 4, things are only gonna get more interesting!
