TRUE BLOOD Season 2 Episode 4: "Shake And Fingerpop" - Review

So after a one-Sunday hiatus, "True Blood" returns with the fourth episode of the second season, "Shake And Fingerpop". I would say that this episode is probably the weakest so far of the second season. It's not a terrible episode, don't get me wrong. But not as eventful as the previous three. It kind of keeps things spinning in terms of who's who and what's what, but doesn't advance much beyond a few small revelations. Intriguingly enough though, what we get with Lafayette and Eric isn't what the previews led us to believe. The previews of this episode immediately had me thinking that Eric let Lafayette go, and then sent Sookie and Bill to Texas as a way to position himself to kill Lafayette without anyone there to stop him.

However, that doesn't turn out to be the case oddly enough. But something a lot more interesting does take place between the two, something which will have some..."interesting" repercussions for Lafayette in Episode 5. Speaking of Sookie and Bill, they do indeed make their trip and then furthermore arrival in Texas. At the end of episode 3, they were sent there by Eric in exchange for Lafeyette's release from the basement of his establishment. Their trip to Texas is a search and rescue mission of a powerful vampire named Godrick. Their arrival however is met with a quick countermove by those responsible for snatching Godrick.

But Bill makes a countermove of his own, to counter the countermove of the kidnappers. A move which reveals some shocking, yet at the same time, kind of forseen, info as to who the Godrick's kidnappers are. I am actually surprised we haven't seen Godrick yet. Atleast some small scenes where he's being held captive in a dank cave or dungeon somewhere. I suspect it's because they haven't casted Godrick yet, or there's something shocking about him that they don't want to reveal yet. Maybe it's the way he looks, or maybe he's a non-human-looking vampire, similar to that of some of the vamps from Bram Stoker's films.

Either way, I don't know when we'll get our first glimpse of him, but I hope it's soon. But I doubt it'll be before August. I could be wrong though. But with just two more episodes to go until August, I can't see it happening. But Sookie and Bill's trip should be one of Season 2's more interesting aspects, especially considering they've taken Jessica with them, and right as they arrive in Texas, and are confronted by the kidnappers hired goon, Jessica finds a way to anger Bill upon their arrival at a nearby hotel. Sam meanwhile grows closer to Daphne, but I see this particular storyline as quite strange.

When Daphne was first introduced at the start of season 2, she really rubbed Sam the wrong way. Mostly because she constantly dropped and broke stuff while working at Sam's restaurant. And now here we are four episodes in, and he and her are apparently on their way to "doing the deed", after a nude swim together in episode 3. It just doesn't make any sense, even in the realm of television, how a person can go from hating ir strongly disliking someone...to sort-of-dating them a short time later. I don't buy it. But then again, Sam is not really good at relationships based on the characters past with Tara, and his pining for Sookie who chose Bill over him. So perhaps this is just another instance where Sam is getting in way over his head too fast, and it will lead to yet another disaster-of-the-heart.

Some intriguing things are revealed about Daphne though in this episode. Mostly centered around something she whispers to Sam while attending a birthday party for Tara at Sookie's place. Her whisper to Sam could mean two things, and it'll be really interesting to see what comes of that later on down the road. As for Jason, he finds himself growing farther apart from the members of the "church", but at the same time, finds himself growing tighter with it's leaders, the reverend and his wife. And by the way, I still think Jason will end up sleeping with her at some point. I stand by that prediction 110 percent. Texas meanwhile gets a bit more crowded when Eric shows up, with an ominous warning for Bill if he doesn't find Godrick fast enough. But Bill seems very curious about why Eric is so obsessed with finding Godrick, a question which Eric dances arounf the entire time.

Tara decides to strike out on her own away from Maryann, and moves in with Sookie, taking her up on her offer. But her move away from Maryann doesn't last long, as Maryann is the one who throws the above-mentioned party for Tara's birthday at Sookie's place. Sookie being out of town and all, is totally unaware of the festivities. The party turns into a typical Maryann-inspired sex orgy however, which Tara cannot seem to resist since Maryann brings along her favorite boytoy, Eggs. But things with Maryann get weirder this time around when during one of her chants, she partially reveals herself for what she really is.

The revelation is indeed shocking, but still leaves many unanswered questions about the weird greek-goddess-like Maryann. However, the final scene of episode 4, which involves Sookie and a hotel bellhop, concludes the ep on it's most surprising note yet. As Sookie learns she's not the "only" one. So this is how we go into episode five. The previews for episode five were not very clear as to what we can expect, except for the war between the vampires and the church, which it seems is about to heat up, and fast. But the most intriguing aspects of episode 5 should be watching Bill try and extract Eric's motives from him, and also what occurs next between Sookie and her newfound..."friend".
