TRUE BLOOD Episode 5:"Sparks Fly Out" - Review

Picking up where "Escape From Dragon House" episode 4 left off, Episode 5 of "True Blood", "Sparks Fly Out"...moves forward with Tara confronting Lafayette about giving Jason the vile of "V", seen in episode 4. The "V", vampire blood, which is sort of like heroin in the town being that it's illegal to sell...caused Jason to have "issues" similar to that of taking too much viagra, and therefore had to have a procedure done in order to fix the problem. Tara's anger at Lafayette eventually subsides however, and Lafayette decides to go see how Jason's doing as a favor to Tara.

While there, things take an interesting turn, as Lafayette gives Jason more "V"...only in a different method of dosage. Telling Jason that he won't give him another full vile until he learns to follow specific instructions on how to use it, something he failed to do previously...even though in some ways, it wasn't really his fault. Meanwhile Bill and Sookie are still having problems in their slightly-newfound relationship. Sookie feels Bill is too different from her. Beyond being a vampire, he doesn't have enough human traits for Sookie's liking, and therefore she decides to push further away from him. Despite Bill's commentary that Sookie can't and shouldn't run away from something simply becuase it's different from her, Sookie still decides it's best for her and Bill to part ways for awhile. She does however seemingly find a new love interest in her boss Sam, who asks her out.

This coming in the middle of a scenario where Sookie confronts Tara about her and Jason's relationship, which she learns about when one of the towns policeman drops the topic into a candid conversation at the bar. But Tara and Jason's relationship seems to come apart just as quickly as it seemed to come together when she catches him everting to his old ways...so to speak. Sookie and Sam meanwhile go on a first date, as Bill decides to give an autobiographical speech at the town church, revealing his life story up until this point.

Episode 5 does an excellent job of balancing all of these intersecting stories for a full 50 minutes. Even though there are some moments where gaps seem to not be filled thoroughly. The interesting thing about episode 5 is of course watching where the big revelation regarding Sam will lead to. And it does indeed lead somewhere in episode 5, even though many different theories can be put forth about a major turning point that happens in the episode...and how Sam is or isn't involved.

The episodes best moments are when Bill attends the church to tell about his life story, and the funny moments that occur beforehand, including a small spat over whether or not Bill will burst into flames if a cross is put on stage with him. Other chuckle-worthy tidbits include a fight between Lafayette and three rednecks at the bar when one of them "insults" his cooking, Jason's reaction to his second dose of "V", and one of Jason's friends who wants to try "Tru-Blood"...the synthetic Japanese blood that some of the vampires in town drink.

Bill doesn't have it very easy in episode 5 though, along with his issues with Sookie and their crumbling relationship, he's also question by the police about the murder in episode 4, and oddly enough...has a few painful flashbacks to his life before he became a vampire. Flashbacks obviously brought on by the auto-bio he gave at the church earlier in the episode. This is also when we learn just how Bill became a vampire, who vamped him, and what became of his family. But the major turning point in "Sparks Fly Out" is the ending, where a major character bites the dust...and we're left to ponder who did it and why. The list of suspects is quite long, and who knows whether we'll find out in Episode 6 or not. But viewers of the show so far should have fun guessing and theorizing until then.
