TRUE BLOOD - Episode 8 Review:"The Fourth Man In The Fire"

Episode eight of HBO's "True Blood" plays on it's title..."The Fourth Man In The Fire". When last we left the show, some rednecks on a serious vampire-hate trip decided to hurl Molatov cocktails into Bills' place, which resulted in it being burned to the ground. Sookie then showed up, just as the police were carting bodies out of the rubble. Her biggest fear was that Bill was one of the deceased...and episode eight seeks to either further that idea, or to dispell it. Sookie doesn't learn the truth however until the middle of the episode, and so she spends most of the episode going through all sorts of emotions ranging from anger, to maliciousness...which comes out during a heated arguement between Sookie and Tara, her best friend.

This leads to Tara storming out of Sookie's house, and telling her that if she wants to get through this rough times alone then she's welcome to do so, more or less in those terms. It's not all bleak for Tara however, as things seem to be going well between her and her mother who has apparently been exorcised of her demons by the hoodoo woman back in episode 7. However, things now shift to Tara...and the focus shifts to her as her mom Lettie Mae's friends and a few others start to pressure her to go to church, and her mom presses her to go see the exorcism woman who "healed" her.

These circumstances end up driving Tara into the arms of a person very familiar to her, while Jason's life continues to get even crazier now that he's still running with his new female friend (Lizzy Kaplan). The two of them run out of "V"...and so they go to some very extensive lengths to get more of it. This after they pay a visit to Sookie's place of work, the bar...where Sookie warns Jason's new female friend of her brothers philandering ways in sort of subtle fashion. She however stands pat, and doesn't let anything Sookie says sway her. In fact, her loyalty actually is strengthened throughout the episode as the finale leads to the "break in" where her and Jason seek out more "V" blood.

Bill meanwhile does show up in episode 8 eventually, whether he's dead or alive I won't reveal here...bu when he does appear...it's a very strange, weird, and yet creatively-written moment all at the same time. The finale of episode 8 is really where a few turning points being to show though. Alot of things happen at the end which will surely affect events in future episodes. Whether it'll be for the better or the worse is yet to be seen however. But whether things take a turn for the better or the worse...they'll definitely be interesting for sure.

One thing about the finale of ep 8 which stands out the most is Sookie's presence at Fangtasia, the local vampire hangout where she is requested to come and help the vampires deal with the problem of a thief who had been stealing money from the club. This is one of the episodes most tense and intriguing as well as suspenseful moments, and it unfolds perfectly before concluding in very strong fashion with a major twist which will shock viewers and sets up a big time standoff in episode 9. Overall, "The Fourth Man In The Fire" is yet another in a string of great "True Blood" episodes. The show has definitely taken a better turn writing wise, and has toned down it's weaknesses and has played more up to it's strengths. If this keeps up, then season one should finish very strong.
