TRUE BLOOD Season 2 Episode 8: "Time Bomb" - Review
"True Blood" Season 2, Episode 8 -- "Timebomb" gets off to an explosive start with Sookie and Eric making their escape from the "Light" churches compound. With a little help from Godrick of course, who we saw make his first appearance at the end of episode 7. Godrick however as a character takes an interesting turn, certainly one that you don't see coming considering he snaps a guys neck right at the start of "Timebomb".

At any rate, Eric and Sookie's escape is hampered when the "Light'ers", dressed and armed for battle with the vampires, surround the compound to prevent their escape. Meanwhile Jason and Sarah Newlin finally say their "goodbyes", leading to Jason hurrying off to rescue his sister before the "Light" church can eliminate her. This leads to a showdown at the chapel, where all parties involved show up for one big battle, including a gang of vampires, led by Stan, who have their sights set on killing Reverend Newlin as part of a pre-emptive strike. |
The parties include Bill Compton, who finally manages to escape Lorena's clutches, and makes it to the chapel to rescue Sookie. Just when things seem like they're about to boil over, and a lot of blood will be spilled, Godrick shows up, and pretty much tells everyone to "chill out", in one form or another. Yes, Godrick is a pacifist/philosopher it would seem. An interesting twist on the character indeed. Especially considering how we see Godrick in flashbacks when he first makes Eric. It seems the centuries have made Godrick a mellow vampire sheriff, and he's not nearly as much interested in killing humans for revenge purposes as Stan, Eric, or the others are. Godrick in some ways is even a lot more passive than Bill is.
Godrick's decree puts the church chapel Battle Royale on ice, and all parties walk away unharmed for the most part. Most of the reverends followers leave him high and dry, including Jason. And Godrick takes the vampires back with him for a celebratory party which occurs later on in the episode. Eric and Stan are not pleased about Godrick giving the "Light'ers" a pass, but considering Godrick is sheriff of the Texas vampire clans, they have no choice but to accept the decision. I found all of this kind of disappointing, because I really wanted to see the "Light'ers" get what was coming to them.
But series creator Alan Ball is certainly not a predictable guy, so I am not surprised that things went down the path of least resistance, when it comes to the vampires and their enemies from the church. Back in Bon Temps, Sam is hiding out it seems, trying to gather the pieces back together after the startling revelations about Maryann. Maryann is a big part of this episode, mostly because the orgy from a few episodes ago, has it's repercussions finally float to the surface. Zombie Eggs as you recall, murdered Daphne for spilling Maryann's secrets. But in "Timebomb", Eggs has no recollection of this, nor does he remember the past few hours of his life. Thus he runs to Merlotte's seeking Tara's help.

Tara, who suffered her own blackout a few episodes ago, agrees to help him, and the two return to Sookie's place where Maryann has prepared a "special" meal for them both. Of course before that, we learn the meal contains pieces of human hearts, and Maryann has worked her usual "mojo" on it. Thus when Tara and Eggs dig in, they are pretty much sealing their own fates. Sam meanwhile returns to his restaurant Merlotte's after getting a phone call. Only to discover upon his return, that there's a dead body in his freezer. That of Daphne, the waitress which Sam was dating until she was revealed to be part of Maryann's cult, and then Eggs killed her.

After discovering the body, it doesn't take long for the cops to show up, in the form of Sheriff Dearborne, and his new deputy Kenya. They question Sam about the murder, a murder which Sam denies committing. Bad news for Sam though, as Andy shows up with a story about seeing Sam at the orgy and being chased by the bull (Maryann). Andy thinks he's helping Sam get off the charges by telling Dearborne this story, but instead it only further convinces him to lock Sam up.
When Sam gets to the local jail, he discovers that some of the people from the orgy are already there. Having been locked up for public indecency and related charges, stemming from their "zoning out" at the hands of Maryann. Back in Texas, the party to celebrate Godrick's rescue brings about some intriguing confrontations. One between Bill and Eric, which of course involves Eric's plan of using Lorena to try and get Sookie away from him. The other involves Lorena recovering from her injuries at the hands of Bill, who bashed her over the head with a flatscreen TV while she was distracted, so he could go rescue Sookie -- and confronting Sookie at the party.
The confrontation is a very entertaining one to watch, and almost gets violent before Godrick steps in and takes charge. Godrick by the way, at the party, continues the pacifist streak by giving Hugo (Sookie's fake husband) a pass, despite his treacherous ways. But he is quite stern with Lorena. This leads to Bill being asked to escort Lorena out of the party and send her on her way for good. But as the two exchange final words outside, Luke shows up at the party, and delivers an explosive message to the vampires in attendance. FOOTNOTES:For those of you wondering about Hoyt and Jessica, Bill tells Hoyt to take her back to Bon Temps after he returns to the hotel with Sookie.
Hoyt obliges, and the two pick up where they left off once back home. But Jessica has a bad moment, which ruins the mood. Going into episode 9, "I Will Rise Up", the big questions will be will Tara's mother Lettie Mae and Lafayette, be able to rescue her from Maryann's clutches. Will Sam get out of jail, and of course the aftermath of the "Party Bomb". It could spell the end of some important characters, but it could also cause Godrick to revert back to his old bloodthirsty ways. Look for some big turning points in the next episode.
