TRUE BLOOD Season 3: "Trouble" - Review

"True Blood" season 3's latest salvo, "Trouble". One of the darkest episodes yet. This season so far, the shows third, has been quite dark already. Werewolves have been introduced, we've gotten a deeper look into the vampire hierarchy, and of course the kidnapping of Bill by werewolf minions of Russell Edgington, the Vampire King of Mississippi. But this episode really gets dark because it finally puts everyone on sides, and makes everyone's motives very well known. Ironically enough, it also puts Tara into a relationship with a vampire. Franklin Mott. Although unlike Sookie, who is with Bill willingly, and mostly because his "glamouring" doesn't work on her...Tara is basically Franklin's prisoner.

And to make matters worse in this episode, we find out that he wants to marry Tara apparently. In one of those shotgun, or should we say in this shows case, at-fang-point weddings. Basically, Tara doesn't want to marry him. But he's a vampire, so, it's not like she can do much to stop him. Including fleeing in terror away from his estate, which is what Tara does in this latest episode. Only to soon find herself back where she first started. Franklin however seems to really love Tara, so it'll be interesting to see if she uses that to eventually try and get him to turn on Russell and the others. While Franklin does work for Russell, he certainly does seem to have his own agenda.

Tara after being kidnapped by Franklin, eventually finds Bill with Russell, and the writers once again try and play up Bill coming over to the dark side in this episode, when he refuses to help Tara scape Franklin's clutches. Meanwhile, Alcide and Sookie's relationship of convenience continues it's own "issues", as Alcide is the alpha-male/wolf type, and Sookie is constantly picking as she usually does. But the arrival of Alcide's ex Debbie, throws Sookie and Alcide's attention from one another's annoying idiosyncracies, to a more important cause, finding Bill. But first, an encounter with Alcide's pack leader makes matters worse, as the wolves seem to be split alongside following Russell's orders, and doing their own thing.

Which I think will play into the "V" blood storyline sooner or later. With werewolves and humans in this show both doing vampire blood, at some point, the vampires must have some sort of influence over them. Which means that season 3 could see yet another Maryanne-esque cult like mentality amonst Bon Temps residents, and others, at some point later on this season. Meanwhile things get even stranger between Sam and his relatives, his newfound relatives that is. And it definitely seems that there's more to them than meets the eye. Particularly with Sam's estranged father.

This is good news to these eyes considering I was getting kind of tired of the Sam/family storyline. I felt it was quickly degenerating into a "Beverly Hillbillies" kind of deal, and a storyline that was far beneath this shows type and style of writing. But it seems that there might be more here than I at first realized. And hopefully, things will continue to get more interesting with this particular storyline. Jason, seemingly having gotten over shooting Eggs in the head at the end of last season, seems to have found himself a new love in a petite blonde named Crystal. But as with Jason's previous relationships with Tara, who's own issues pushed them apart, and Amy in season 1, who was murdered while he slept right next to her, you have to wonder how long it'll be before things with Crystal go sour.

I think it will happen eventually, but not very quickly. But if you asked me would Jason and Crystal be together by the time season 4 rolls around? I'd say no. Eric makes a brief appearance in the new episode, dropping an interesting dime on the vampire queen of Louisiana to Russell. Which has some pretty bad repercussions at the conclusion of "Trouble", an episode which lives up to it's title definitely, in how it ends. Throwing in a small footnote here, all you Jessica fans, yes she does appear in "Trouble", but just briefly so the writer san push along the possibility of an Arlene vs. Jessica showdown at some point.

Although I'm not sure how that would go exactly, unless Arlene gets hyper-courageous at some point. But with Hoyt possibly having found a new love, Jessica's possible war with Arlene might not happen at all. Then again, it might send Jessica into a rage, thus turning her into evil Jessica again, only on a much larger scale, so you never can tell with this show. But season 3 continues to please, my opinion.
