Episode 12 of HBO's "True Blood" is the season finale, the wrap up of season one. "You'll Be The Death Of Me" finished up a first season which started off slow but picked up steam really quickly and ended with a bang. Many issues were left unresolved at the end of episode 11, the most important one being the startling revelation that Arlene's husband Renee was the killer, and that information was close to never being revealed due to Jason turning himself in for the murders after Amy turned up dead in his bed. But eventually, the info gets out when Renee makes Sookie his next target, not being able to control his urges to kill any woman in the town of Bon Temps who he sees as a "fangbanger"...a woman who has "relations" with vampires.

And Sookie's well-documented relationship with Bill puts her right on his next hitlist. But it's revealed that Renee had designs on killing Sookie before, however when he arrived the first time and found Sookie absent, but her grandmother in the house instead...he proceeded to kill her -- as revealed in flashbacks. Renee's identity as the killer is further revealed when Arlene catches her kids watching tapes which Renee created as a manifesto on his victims. She also discovers a tape on "Cajun dialect". It's not exactly clear how much was true or untrue about Renee, but we learn that Renee was not his real name, and he's originally from Texas...not Louisiana.
Renee nearly accomplishes his goal of killing Sookie, but she gets some help from Sam who displays his shape-shifting abilities as he comes to her rescue, and Bill who braves death-by-sunlight to save Sookie from a psychotic Renee. The chase scene between Renee and Sookie is one of the episodes best moments. It's very thrilling, intense, and is done in very edgy fashion....with Sookie having flashbacks to all of Renee's victims as she runs like hell away from him. Things eventually come to a gruesome end for Renee, in a scene which resembles how Jake died at the end of "Cursed" (if you've seen that movie you know what I'm talking about).
With the Renee issue taken care of, things seem to be looking up for Sookie...well atleast for a little bit. Things hit the fan again after Lafayette, Tara, and Sam come by to check on Sookie after she nearly becomes Renee's next victim. Tara having dropped everything at the palace of her new found female friend, where she meets someone who might be a possible love-interest for her in season 2, and learns more about the social worker woman who took her in...the motives behind that are still unclear by the way. But the woman has some freaky abilities as it's revealed in a scene where as she meditates in the yard, the atmosphere around her ripples. Tara however, obviously is not so engulfed in her new life as not to still care about Sookie, hence her presence after Sookie was attacked.

But one thing about Tara, her attitude has certainly undergone a total 360 degreee turn after just a few days with the mysterious social worker, in fact Tara is almost "motivational speaker-ish" in her new outlook on life. Speaking of which...it's revealed later on in the season finale that the mysterious social worker has some past ties to Sam...which is revealed through an interesting confrontation between the two as Tara leaves Sookie's place. Another question mark left hanging until season two. This sends Sam into a tailspin, where he has a rotten attitude at work later that night, and is eventually seen near the end of the episode taking large amounts of cash out of his safe as if he's planning to leave town. Meanwhile Bellefleur is depressed and upset that he had to release Jason after it was revealed Renee was the killer. |
The scene where he and Sheriff Dearborne have a discussion about the matter is another interesting moment because Bellefleur seems really steamed about having to release Jason Stackhouse from prison, despite his obvious innocence. This signals that there might be some hidden reason why Bellefleur hates Jason so much. But then again he's always grumpy character-wise so you never can really tell. Bill meanwhile, after recovering from nearly being fried to death...returns to see how Sookie is doing after surviving her encounter with Renee.
But Bill's appearance signals an interesting twist which comes at the end of the episode. Someone (unshown) comes after Lafayette at the bar, while he's out back putting trash in the dumpster. And then the same person (seemingly Bill) arrives at Sookie's house. Bill also informs Sookie that he recently "fed"...and guess who turns up dead at the end of ep 12? Bill however arrives back home soon to Eric who shows up with the woman Bill had to "turn" to set things right at the trial a few eps ago. So now to further complicate matters with Sookie, Bill is stuck with this thrall who will apparently be living under his roof in season 2. So we're left with so many questions to ponder as the show is now on hiatus...and most likely won't return until maybe next September? Season one was a blast though, and I can only hope season two is just as much fun.
