TRUE BLOOD Season 3: "Beautifully Broken" - Review

Episode 2 "Beautifully Broken" continues on from where episode 1 of "True Blood"s third season, "Pack Of Wolves" left off. When last we left Bill, he was cornered in the woods by a pack of werewolves. Episode 2 gives us a small taste of vampire vs. werewolf battle, but the fight is quickly halted when vampire royalty shows up to explain to Bill why he's been abducted, and what comes next. It seems season 2 is really delving more into the vampire politics side of things, and is also giving viewers more of a taste of the hierarchy of the vampire species, which is separate from what we've seen in the first two seasons, where the vampires were more urbanized. But season 2 seems to be straying more into vampire King/Queen politics, and the fallout from season 2's events, and how that all ties into everything. |
And with all the secrets and dirty laundry these top-dog vampires have in their closets, such as the vampire queen of Bon Temps dealing "V" blood, it'll be interesting to see as season 2 unfolds, what the repercussions are, and who pays a price, or possibly the ultimate price. Sookie in ep 2 was still searching for any lead on Bill, and decides to question Eric about the "Operation Werewolf" rune she found on one of Bill's kidnappers. Problem with the whole werewolf/vampire storyline this season, is it's kind of stolen from "Underworld:Rise Of The Lycans". I was hoping more for us to see werewolves declaring war on vampires, and all of Bon Temps human residents caught in the middle.
Instead, we're kind of getting a werewolves-work-for-vampire-royalty storyline, which as we find out in flashbacks, Eric has ties to the werewolves back in the WWII days when he was running with the now dead Godrick. Eric however doesn't immediately let Sookie in on what he knows about Operation Werewolf, or the werewolves in general. But seeing as how the theme of this season is Eric pining for Sookie, he eventually breaks down and clues Sookie in on the werewolves. Even at one point offering to protect her from them, since they're now hunting Sookie, for a reason which ties into Bill, and the person who employed Bill's kidnappers. By the way, this is episode 2 with no Alcide. Hopefully he'll show up before episode 5 atleast.
The Eric and Sookie relationship meanwhile seems to be getting hot and heavy very early on in season 3. Kind of makes you wonder just how long this possible torrid affair will be kept under wraps. Will Eric and Sookie get together at all? If they do, how will it happen? And will Bill walk in on it, or find out some other way? I think they'll tease us all season long with this big question mark, kind of how they teased us in season 1 with how the Bon Temps serial killer was. Although I personally won't find this mystery as entertaining as who the Bon Temps killer was. I don't really care whether Sookie and Eric get together or not.

But I'm sure a lot of other viewers do. As for me, I think it would throw an interesting wrinkle into the relationships in the show, but it's not something I am on the edge of my seat to find out. Jason and Andy meanwhile have grown closer as seemingly best buds, all brought on by the secret they're keeping, which is that Jason really shot Eggs and not Andy. But Jason seems to possibly have found himself a new profession when he helps Andy bust some local drug dealers. And if this Jason storyline leads to where I think it will, and should Tara find out Jason shot Eggs, it'll be intriguing to see how that all plays into Jason's possible new job, and whether it trickles down to costing Andy Belefleur his. As for Tara, she goes through a lot of different emotions and sceneries in episode 2. At the start, she's trying to "pill" herself to death. But is rescued by Lafayette. Lafayette also gets into it with Lettie Mae for failing to prevent Tara from commiting suicide. |
This leads to Lafayette doing a whole "scared straight" deal with Tara, where he takes her to see someone from his past, hoping it'll straighten out Tara for good. This is also where we meet two of season 3's new characters. Both human for those wondering. But once Tara returns to Sam's restaurant later that night, she runs into someone who isn't quite human. Another of season 3's new characters, making their first appearance. And this person soon sort of bonds with Tara by helping her lay the smackdown on some rednecks in the parking lot. For those who care about the Jessica/Hoyt romance, it gets even more sour in episode 2, looks like these two could be done. But Jessica soon earns a new problem, once she discovers her corpse has been stolen, or has possibly got up and left on it's own. Episode 2 concludes with a "fiery" finale, where a character from the past, an enemy from the past I should say, makes an appearance, and ends up quickly getting on the bad side of one of the series main characters. As for episode 3, previews suggest it will be another hot one, with lots of conflict and turmoil. Seems season 3 is getting off to a tragic yet entertaining start. They key will be, can they keep this up for atleast 8 more episodes?
