My Thoughts:Third try is a decent one.
Review:"Wrong Turn 3:Left For Dead", is the latest chapter in the "Wrong Turn" series which began way back in 2003 with the original "Wrong Turn", and was then followed up in 2007 with the first sequel "Wrong Turn:Dead End". The third installment begins with a group of kids going rafting in the stomping grounds of the mutant, killer, deformed hillbillies. A decision which soon proves to be a fatal mistake. Apparently the stories of numerous people getting wacked in the woods by these freaks has not spread past the woods of West Virginia yet.
At any rate, one girl does manage to survive the massacre, and later on she runs into a group of prisoners and two corrections officers who are stranded in the very same woods. Thanks to their convoy being attacked by 3-finger. Now, they all must band together to survive the threat, something which is a lot easier said than done. This movie is different from parts 1 and 2 because 3-finger is basically solo and all alone in this installment. Unlike part one where it was him and his two brothers, and then in part two, him and various family members.
In "Left For Dead"...it's just 3-finger and his son (seen at the end of part 2). But considering his son is pretty young and puny, he gets taken out early on in the film by one of the escaped prisoners. This of course pisses 3-finger off, and makes him even more determined to take out his prey. Amongst all of this, there's of course in-fighting amongst the escaped prisoners, especially when they come across an armored car full of cash. The officers who are outnumbered by the prisoners, end up having the tables turned on them.
And they become the prisoners in a way. Them, along with the surviving girl of the group of teens. So the scenario for the good guys, which amount to the surviving girl, and one of the corrections officers, isn't a very good one. They've got threats coming at them from all angles. But while an angry 3-finger himself is a threat, in a way, he is also a good thing for the lone officer and the girl, Fonda. His constant attacks upon the group keep the prisoners from deciding to wack the officer, Nate, and Fonda. Something which the lead con named Chavez, threatens to do but is always sidetracked when 3-finger launches another attack.
The scenario presented is a fun one to watch. With the prisoners having to use their survival skills which they learned on the inside, to battle a survivalistic threat on the outside, in 3-finger. Another thing that sets "Left For Dead" apart from the first two films, is that it's set during the night. This movie takes place 85% during the night time, and since the lighting in the film isn't very good, it's pretty difficult to follow at some times when it comes to who's bene killed and who hasn't. The deaths, speaking of which, are not nearly as good as they were in part 2.
But the opening 15 minutes do offer some decent kills like an arrow through the boob, and one guy sliced in half by a rigged trap. But beyond the movies opening moments, the kills really drop off in quality. Also, it's really not easy to root for many of these characters to survive the film beyond maybe Fonda. Even Nate, the good guy becomes annoying at times. I honestly believe that when it comes to "Wrong Turn 3", 3-finger flying solo was a good thing for the characters. Because I couldn't see most of them living through this movie if 3-finger was aided by the rest of his clan.
You would think that convicts of all people would be able to be a match for the mutant backwods hillbilly's. But between their personal beefs with one another, greed, psychotic anti-social behavior, and the constant, random alliance switching with one another, I think these guys would've been made short work of if 3-finger had backup. The films conclusion is not nearly as thrilling or suspenseful as the previous two films conclusions were, and even a scene where the alpha-convict battles 3-finger in a fight to the death, doesn't do much to help the movie.
The final scene is just ridiculous, and wasn't very well thought out or written. "Wrong Turn 3" delivers a little bit of the same. Not more or much of, and that's one of it's main problems. However, the movie isn't a total waste, but it's by far the weakest of the trilogy thus far.
Positives:The kills of the opening 15 minutes.
Negatives:Three finger going solo this time around was kind of boring in a way. The characters weren't very interesting, the kills drop off in quality after the opening 15 minutes, the night time scenes were poorly lit, and the final scene was just plain dumb.
Overall:Two out of four stars.
