Review:The only thing worse than being involved in a plane crash, is surviving the crash only to be stuck in the himilayan mountains with no food, no help, and no means of communication. The only thing worse than all of those things, is being stuck in the mountains after surviving a plane crash, with a bloodthirsty yeti lurking about. That's the story that "Yeti" tells, as a group of college football team members and their significant others survive a plane accident, and end up stuck in the snowy himalayans.
The ones who do survive get the notion to try and go for help, so a few are dispatched to do so...while the others stay behind and search for survivors, food, and try to stay warm. Unfortunately, the dispatched teens are disposed of by a bloodthirsty yeti who has an insatiable hunger for human flesh. Not sure if that's in line with real life yeti's, should they exist, but that's what they're going with in this film. Due to one of the dispatched teens being killed by the Yeti, and the other being severely injured...the left behind teens begin to descend more and more into chaos.
People are hungry, frostbitten, scared, cold, angry, worried, and soon horrible fits of human nature such as implied cannibalism and the slaughter of woodland creatures begin to rear their ugly heads. But that's not their only problem. With the Yeti having tracked their location, it soon begins to drag away the dead bodies of the crash victims. But it soon begins to crave live meat, and so the group has only a limited amount of time to be rescued or their lunch. I'm not a big fan of yeti films, nor sci-fi original pictures....but this one was pretty good.
The Yeti, being a guy in a suit one minute...and a cgi mess the next doesn't make the movie. But oddly and surprisingly enough, the acting does. That, and the scenario at hand. We watch this group of diverse kids have to endure blizzard conditions as they wait for rescue. Of course because of the conditions atop the mountain, they soon begin to turn on one another. And sides are taken as some things are suggested in order for survival, while others bat down the ideas not wanting to lower themselves to the least common denominator of cannibalism and murder.
This presents the films cast with a huge problem they have to solve, and is the source of much of the character conflict, as well as some humorous moments within the movie. Then there are the few teens who spread paranoia throughout the group after claiming they saw something drag way a few of the dead crash victims overnight. Having tested actors such as Crystal Lowe, Carly Pope, and Brandon Jay McLaren head up the young cast works very well in the films favor.
And is quite the compliment considering most sci-fi originals make their terrible cgi monster the center of the films activity. But it's nice to see that the people behind the film knew they had a talented cast and utilized their skills early and often. The yeti itself is deent looking when it's not in cgi mode, and the deaths are pretty gory which is always a plus. Body parts are ripped off, guts and hearts are ripped out, and someone even gets their face yeti-stomped into a bloody pulp. Good stuff indeed.
The only big problem with the film is an avalanche scene which takes place later on. For budget reasons obviously, the scene is basically made up of recycled avalanche stock-footage which seems to be from a 90's ski instruction video of feature film. Either way, it's quite an eyesore. But beyond that, and the ridiculous final scene, "Yeti:Curse Of The Snow Demon" is a good, entertaining, cheesy, B-horror film which is worth wasting 82 minutes on if you're a fan of yeti movies or just in the mood for something bloody, yet something that also doesn't take itself too seriously.
Positives:Good performances by most of the cast, a few funny moments here and there, gry deaths, an interesting and entertaining overall plot situation.
Negatives:The ending avalanche scene and the films final scene.
Overall:Three out of four stars.
