My Thoughts:Vampires everywhere are spinning in their coffins.
Review:I expected "The Thirst" to possibly be the film that atleast somewhat changes the course of vampire movies, but instead it just furthers the long line of crappy vampire movies that have come and gone over the past few years. The film follows a college student (Matt Keeslar) who's stripper/junkie girlfriend (Clare Kramer) winds up in the hospital after passing out on stage during a performance. While there, she meets a mysterious nurse, who eventually checks her out of the hospital and takes her home. When her boyfriend arrives, he finds her in a blood-filled bathtub, dead of an apparent suicide. The key word being apparent, because soon, while out with his friends trying to get over her death, Maxx spots Lisa at a goth club, and eventually learns that she's become one of the undead in a group of vampires who call themselves "The Family" (Obvious Sopranos reference), led by a vampire named Darius (Jeremy Sisto).
For a cast this talented, which other than Keeslar, Sisto, and Kramer, includes Erik Palladino, and Serena Scott Thomas...the script for "The Thirst" just didn't measure up. Watching this movie, I was thinking all the way through what exactly were lead writers Ben Lustig and Liz Maccie thinking? I say lead because altogether 5 writers were involved in penning this movie. And to be honest, it really does show as it's just one dreadful mistake after the other. It's really one of those cases where you can tell there were too many chiefs and not enough indians. "The Thirst" certainly doesn't skimp on the blood though, and if you like your vampire movies with gallons upon gallosn of blood this movie won't disappoint you. It's got blood in almost every scene, and in every form.
Dripping, gushing, pouring, spouting, puddled....you name it. But the movie is so cruddy that really the blood eventually becomes a poor cover for a bad story. It's like the writers are saying.."yeah, we really screwed up the screenplay but oh look hey here's some more blood hey look at that". The acting in "The Thirst" can also be called into question but with a script like this it's hard to tell if these talented actors were just having an off movie, or weren't given anything golden to work with. Even Jeremy Sisto is managed to be made into a mediocre thespian in this poor man's version of a vampire/comedy. Clare Kramer does an excellent job in her role as Lisa, and basically carries the entire film as best she can.
Too bad she's not given an atleast halfway decent script to work with. The story in this film basically goes nowhere once Lisa is vamped and her boyfriend finds out about it, and in a desperate attempt to be with his now undead girlfriend, allows himself to be vamped by her. After that, we're treated to bad jokes, blood, blood, and more blood, and some horrible dialogue. Really, this is a movie where the vampires go out and just prey on people while Lisa and Maxx try to work out their "new" relationship as vampires, and how they don't want to be slaves to the thirst and violence like the others.
But everyone knows that vampire movies, even cheesy hokey ones like "The Thirst"...need a plot that goes beyond vampires biting the nearest human and moving on to do the same again while laughing and yelling alot. "The Thirst" had some new ideas though I must admit, and had assembled a very awesome cast. But the story just didn't deliver, and in the end it really hurt this picture, about as much as a vampire draining a human being dry.
Positives:Clare Kramer's performance.
Negatives:Bad script, overdone blood which became a tool to cover up the bad story. Awful dialogue and a lack of action.
Overall:What a waste.
