The aim of the project is to strengthen EIA and SEA as tools to ensure that biodiversity, and its role in providing ecosystem services, alleviating poverty and meeting the Millennium Development Goals is recognised as a fundamental issue in the planning, assessment and execution of projects and plans in developing countries.
The project set out to develop capacity amongst stakeholders in a number of regions, particularly southern Africa, south and south-east Asia, Central America and the Small Island Developing States.
The project also operates a small grant scheme to support capacity building efforts at grass-roots level in countries outside these focal regions.
