TTC ordered Ford ELF in late 90s to replace its aging Orion 2 fleet. ELF
features manual fold out ramp. They are not as reliable as Orion 2 as they
are not designed to be heavy duty. In addition, it experienced problems
such as the fan belt and compressor problems in the engine. As a result,
some of them went up in smoke and forced to reduce the wheelchair capacity from
4 to 3 due to safety purposes. TTC attempted to replace these troublesome
buses in 2006. Unfortunately no quality supplier could not be found at
that time. This forced TTC to extend the life of these vehicles by
overhauling them. According to the TTC Chairman, TTC has placed an order
in 2008 for 180 wheel transit vehicles. (Source NOW Article-
Tranist Access Going Down on June 5-11, 2008 issue). One can easily tell
which vehicle received rebuilt by looking at the back of the bus. The back
has two extra yellow lights on the top of the bus.
