Introduction:

Trains is one of the most fascinating inventions.  It was invented sometime in the 1550s.  The first railway network (known as Wagonways) used wooden rails, horses, and wagons to move cargos or passengers.

Major innovations to the train technology

  • By 1776, wooden rails and wheels on the carts were replaced by iron
  • In 1789, William Jessup designed flanged wheels for wagons.  Flanged wheels have grooves on them to help the wheels to get a better grip on the rails.
  • Richard Trevithick built the first steam engine tramway locomotive
