The Cooperative Experience

"… parents and children learn together through shared life in both home and school."
-- Dr. Katharine Whiteside Taylor

The focus at RCNS is on learning through play. Our program is based on the ideas pioneered by Dr. Katherine Whiteside Taylor in her groundbreaking book about cooperatives, "Parents and Children Learn Together." We recognize that parents are the most important teachers children will ever have and, under the guidance of highly qualified and dedicated teachers, parents at RCNS have the unique opportunity to assist in the classroom and participate in all aspects of the children's education.

As a cooperative, RCNS is run by the parent membership with the help of our Director and trained staff. Members elect a parent-run Executive Board that works with the school community in making decisions that affect everything from school operations to curriculum.

Benefits for the Child

A child's first school experience can impact his or her feelings about school for many years to come. At RCNS, teachers and parents work together to create a well-planned atmosphere of warmth and understanding that encourages each child to realize his or her own potential as an individual and as a member of a group. More importantly, we respect each child's unique nature and support their need to grow and develop at their own pace.

Our program nurtures social, intellectual, physical and emotional growth by creating opportunities for children to explore, create and interact with other children and adults. It builds self-esteem and encourages independent thinking.

Why Choose RCNS?

Benefits for the Parent

RCNS empowers parents by providing them with valuable insights into the challenges and joys common to preschoolers. As a result, parents find greater pleasure in interacting with their own children. Parents also gain self-confidence through classroom participation, parent education programs, social events and the regular exchange of ideas between parents and teachers.

By serving on a job committee or as an elected officer on the parent-run Executive Board, every member has the responsibility and privilege of helping in the formation of school policy and curriculum. At regular membership meetings, parents participate in discussions on coop business, stay informed of upcoming events and classroom developments, and enjoy guest speakers and other programs addressing issues that affect us all.
