OVERVIEW OF 2008 TENNESSEE DELEGATE SELECTION PROCESS



55 Delegates and 52 alternates


A Total of 40 delegates will be elected on February 12, 2008 during the Presidential Preference Primary. 27 individuals will be elected as Congressional District delegates, three from each district. 13 positions will be elected on February 12, 2008 as state wide at-large delegates.



The State Chairman, Republican National Committeeman and Committeewoman are delegates to the convention and have no alternate delegates. RNC Rule 13(a)(2)


12 at large delegates and all alternate delegates will be selected by the Tennessee Republican State Executive Committee. State Party by-laws require preference be given to those that were candidates for district and at large delegate on the February 12, 2008 ballot when selecting alternate delegates. Those selections will be made at the spring 2008 Tennessee Republican State Executive Committee meeting. Persons that desire to be considered for appointment as an at-large delegate or alternate delegate should submit a written request for consideration to the Tennessee Republican Party no later than February 23, 2008.




Requirements for becoming a candidate for delegate

on the February 12, 2008 ballot.


Obtain a nominating petition from the State Election Commission or local election commission. Collect 100 valid signatures from voters eligible to vote for the delegate position sought. TCA Section 2-13-305(b)


Petitions must be filed with the Secretary of State’s office by NOON, December 13, 2007. The petition must include a statement of commitment to a presidential candidate. The presidential campaign must also consent to the delegate candidate’s candidacy. For each congressional district, a presidential candidate must consent to at least one more and no more than twice the number of delegate candidates allocated to the district.




PLEASE NOTE: There is a bill pending in the Tennessee Legislature to move Tennessee’s Primary to February 5, 2008.
