Pensylvania, along with New Jersey, are the only two states where delegates are not bound to vote for who wins the primary in that state.
The significance of this information is that of the 2,488 delegates who will vote for president at the Republican National Convention (9/1/08 - 9/4/08 in Minneapolis), PA can easily provide more delegates for Ron Paul (62) who do not need to become involved with the Republican Party establishment (i.e., no need to participate in or get elected at any type of Republican caucus or state convention) than any other state. The only requirement is to be a registered Republican and follow a simple procedure to become a delegate. And, we don't need to convince thousands of other PA Republicans to vote for Ron Paul in the primary. (That's certainly a worthwhile goal that I don't want to discourage anyone from trying to accomplish. I'll continue to inform as many potential voters as possible about why Ron Paul is the only good choice for president that we'll have in 2008. And, I'll definitely focus my efforts on helping Ron Paul win the general election in Nov., 2008 after he wins the Republican nomination.)
Here are the main steps in the procedure to become a delegate:
1. Make sure that you're a registered Republican--while the deadline to vote in the primary is early next year, it's something you should do before the end of next week if you want to become a delegate.
2. On or after 12/5/07, call 717-787-5280. That's the number for the PA Secretary of State, Elections Division. Ask whoever answers to send you a packet with the necessary forms and information to run to become a delegate to the Republican National Convention.
3. Between 1/22/08 and 2/12/08, get the signatures of at least 250 (probably 400 to 500 to be safe) registered Republicans who live in your Congressional District. You will need to pay a $25.00 fee to file your petition with the state.
4. On 4/22/08, you will have a good chance of being elected a delegate.
