Small Boat Design, for rowing Boats:
|
A Boat, if it's to be
rowed easily, has it's Bottom as it's Primary Design
Element. There are Three Critical Elements we must build
into the bottom of the small rowing boat, or it will row
like a raft: 1- Forward Rocker: 2- Aft Rocker: 3- Straight Mainline of the bottom: -The Idea is quite simple actually. Take a pine
board about 10 feet or so in length, and lay it on the
floor in front of you. Congrats! You Got
Yourself a BOAT! Get the Nails and
the Caulking Out! Small Boat Bottom Design. Looks Like This: For Rowing, the well designed small
boat has a virtually flat main bottom, extending from the
forward quarter back to the after quarter. there is a
slight, but steady rise forward, to allow ease of
slipping along through the water, and a quick and
pronounced rocker to the stern, to provide that all
important drag-reduction all rowing boats require. stem As I said, my drawings aren't the best. The stern didn't come out too bad at all, but the bow is a bit mis-leading. The forward rise is just a tad shorter in length than it should be, and it should also look almost like a Straight line as it rises toward the heel of the stem. Overall, the boat in the illustration would row along quite nicely, whether a pram bow was fitted, or if the same set of lines were lengthened to close in to a stempost forward. |
